Images as text in listing description

One thing I have always wondered that could be a potential security risk when buying, is when people use an image for their item description.
So, all the text and whatever in the listing is just one large image. I'l try and find another example.

Surely the seller would be able to change the image (if hosted elsewhere) after the auction, and send the buyer something different?

Or, do ebay "screenshot" the image?

ivegotinfo 02-23-2008 07:04 PM

they dont screenshot. you can change them.
i always use my own hosted images in all my auctions but i never had any use for changing the image after auction end.. maybe if you are out to scam people lol.

Hmm, yea. I was going to buy a product from a seller, being a complete niche he was the only guy offering it. But the whole description was an image, so I was a little skeptical about buying it. Can't see other than to change the text anyone would use an image?

I sometimes use them because you can include colors, pictures without having to pay a fee.

you can use regular text and do that(use colors&pics) with out paying a fee if you know some html...

mantisinc 02-24-2008 03:00 PM

I know you can put images in the HTML, as I always do. Well I always create my listings in dreaweaver anyway.

But I'm referring to when people have their WHOLE listing as an image, including the item description.

highwhey 02-25-2008 12:28 PM

I was thinking how using images in place of written text will help you sell vero items...would that help?

mantisinc 02-25-2008 12:34 PM

There is still the title to take into consideration though...

ytl 02-26-2008 04:06 PM

yeah..

I've thought about doing this a few times.. reckoning it would reduce the risk, ive also thought about doing the whole thing as an swf, or more accurately as a pdf as application type swf so it can be easily remotely updated via a text file read into the php script output as an swf file. Not about changing it and scamming, just for the purpose of revising a listing (e.g. typos etc, and sometimes I like to play with style to see if it generates extra store traffic etc... ) but I found that revising too many listings too often brings unwanted attention..

I've used images before to get around keyword spamming. They can't boot your auction for that if the text isn't searchable! Or at least they couldn't 2 years ago....who knows what they'd say now! LOL

ciuperci 03-05-2008 05:39 PM

They could do it so their auction looks the same in all browsers, maybe they noticed some browser screwing it up and didn't want to debug it. Or they could do it because that item breaks some ebay rules. Or they could be scammers, of course. Check their feedback and decide.

As far as VERO is concerned, you can have it struk down if they find it by the title (btdt).

Since we're on this topic, anyone know any specific eBay policy that forbids auction descriptions (text) embedded in images? Link?

pauluss 03-06-2008 04:14 AM

you can make good use this sort of stuff and can give your advert a wonderful a great look & feel

As you can do stuff you can do using traditional ebay listing or auctiva/andle etc

Here is a good exmaple of it used well

Search out ''Canvas Giclee Prints'' and youll see lots of good exmaples of it in use

Yes, but images (especially large ones) will make loading for dial up users a nightmare.

I thought about using a frame to include an external page, but not sure if that'd work.
