Watch out who you sell to (Electronics)

Sold an xbox 360 2 weeks ago. A buyer with 70 positive fb bought it. Had no history of selling what so ever. 2 days after receiving the xbox he emails me saying he wants his money back because the xbox has red rings and that he wants his shipping money back too. I told him i tested the xbox and it worked perfectly before i shipped it. He responds saying he doesnt care he wants a refund.

We all know the buyer does what he wants on eb*y. I try to not push buttons with guy because i dont want a negative feedback and bad DSR ratings. So i nicely explained to him that i before i shipped out the xbox i marked it just in case someone would try to send me back their broken xbox. I told him this has happened to me before and i am not getting scammed again. But if the xbox that i sent you really had the red rings i will give him a full refund.

Its been 3 weeks now and the buyer has not yet contacted me about the xbox. Don't let those certain buyers run all over you. Be smart.

This has happened to me a lot. Buyers can be idiots :amen:

BiN4RY 07-21-2011 01:31 AM

Good job OP, very clever of you.

JRYAN34 07-21-2011 02:14 AM

FYI, fore more expensive items or items that are rare, always make some type of identification mark (ie, blacklight pen, etc.) and take pics of important identifiers like serial numbers, etc. If the buyer still insists on trying to rip you off, then threaten with a police report, and if they still do not back down, then dont be afraid to actually file a police report.

KingRay 07-21-2011 02:32 AM

Yeah, I did that same thing on a vintage coleman lantern I sold a couple years ago. he claimed it was messed up and had rust on it. I told him about a marking and never heard from them again. Some people are just Morons.

You are lucky .

Great now the whole world knows how to do this.

Good job OP, but in my case, I would usually bluff for things like these.

doughboykilla 07-21-2011 01:37 PM

Hell the buyers dosent even have to send anything back and ebay will give them a full refund.

cherrqell 07-21-2011 02:41 PM

What I used to do when I sold iphones, and ipods was copy down the serial number, then I would take a picture of the item with the serial number clearly shown. I would then send along the invoice, and a copy of the picture with serial number highlighted. This way it would discourage the buyer from pulling a fast one letting them know the returned item must match the serial number.

I agree with the other post, what you did will discourage an amature, but a professional scammer will not wilt so fast. But good job.

Pretty much these days ebay requires them to give them the return tracking and wont release funds back to them until it shows delivered back to seller.

BUT the only problem is that when you have a claim they always say its easier on you to click "refund" the buyer to make it easier and to avoid the number of cases against your top rates seller score. When you do though the whole "must send delivery conf to seller" is out the window and they are simply refunded with no proof at all.

I have been on the losing and winning end of both of these scenarios.

doughboykilla 07-22-2011 12:50 AM

Na the buyer did'nt send nothing back to me and got a full refund and i got banned for posting feedback telling people how ebay refunds the buyers and lets them keep the items.

KingRay 07-22-2011 10:30 AM

Thats odd. Must have been a while back or something. Ebay wont do that anymore. Not unless there are other things like I mentioned before. paypal claims are different but ebays are pretty lock tight on SNAD's

I have tested this on an account that I used for issues like this in several different ways and never got a refund before getting the items. IF however it was continued via the claim process on its own.

oompaloompa 07-22-2011 11:02 AM

the funny thing is, he could have still sent you to broken one and you would STILL have to refund as it his word against yours and tracking wins.....

taking photo of serial number along with item is fine, but it does not prove you sent that one to buyer anyway...

only thing I can think of is get a tripod set up at post office and film yourself packing it, close up of serial, taping it, and handing over and then close up of receipt, haha and they will still say no thats not proof you could have edited it...

I wonder how many scammers are out there that do this all day and how much free stuff they get daily.

doughboykilla 07-22-2011 12:38 PM

Probly alot it seems most buyers now days will try to find any thing wrong so they can get a item for free. And they can send anything back and get a refund. I had a guy buy a dish dvr box from me he got it said it didnt work so i told him to send it back for a refund and he sent back a non dvr box and kept the dvr so i knew right then that it worked and he wanted to swap it out. then the cable box i sold the buyer open a SNAD because i forgot to send the powercord. then i sent it but it was to late ebay refunded him and he kept the item. it was only $13 but still it could had been $1300.

this has been about 3-4 months ago so ebay might had changed it but i dout it.

Has eb*y done anything about this? Stupid question but what does SNAD mean.

BiN4RY 07-22-2011 04:31 PM

Significantly not as described

Exactly. If the guy files a claim, and waits long enough they will just give him a refund without having to return it. Trust me I know I posted before and lost a $300 projector because of ebays ****ty policy.

haha the first one must be it!

When taking photos of your high priced items like laptops, iPhone etc, print out the photo of the iPhone, at the bottom of the paper date it and sign it with a statement of the date you shipped it out. Take it to a UPS store and have the document notarized for 10 bucks. If it's a 10.00 item then you wouldn't do this, but if your selling a $500 item then having your document notarized will protect you when paypal or ebay wants to see proof that you shipped out the item the buyer claims is broke.
