What company are you shipping? I know that when a package with FedEx gets lost, it then is transferred to UTAH where a company does research to find the item and return it to the sender. This process is called a trace.

In Los Angeles, anything that comes in and isn't picked up goes to US Customs Warehouse where it is auctioned off.
