google voice alternative

i havent set up a new account in a while and my old standby was to use google voice. I tried set up a new account and use GV and wasn't able to get a number and from a google search i've concluded others are having trouble getting a number with GV.

what are you all using as an alternative?

i was trying with a brand new cell number never before used.
