Anyone notice ebay is now assigning user names to new accounts?

Anyone notice ebay is now assigning user names to new accounts?

Started noticing this today and wondered if anyone else has noticed the same thing?

It is not happening on every account, just random.

Maybe they don't want people choosing usernames that are the same name as a website. I know eBay HATES that! Much better to have everyone with names like XRCV0000172 instead of something personalized.

Maybe I can have R2D8 then?

Noticed x2 accounts.... decided to let them rest.

That's kinda silly if they are auto-generating account names. I wonder if they would still give those accounts the option to 'change user ID' then.

If so, then what is really the purpose of them auto-generating account name?

I was going to do that but then thought it might not be a good idea.

Will test it when I have a couple days on the account.

Weird it happened randomly.

Typical eb BS. They make system changes almost daily but only roll it out to a few servers at first. If you are unlucky enough to attach to one of those test servers you become a guinea pig beta tester for them. That is why they have that "tell us what you think" link on every screen hoping to get feedback.

Re: Anyone notice ebay is now assigning user names to new accounts?

I have been seeing this for the past month or so.
Since every person who makes a purchase on eBay has to have a user name in their system they create one for some people.
These are the people who are going through the checkout system as a GUEST.
That is what I figured out a few weeks ago.
The names I was running into usually had an "*" in the middle or 2 of them in the name.

^ I think Sandy is referring to the usernames when creating a new account

Anyway, if true that really sucks. Not surprised though.

I had 2 stealths that had ebay generated usernames, I changed the account to my own stealth ID and so far nothing bad.

this must be a USA thing, not noticed it.

I get suggestions based on what I inputted, if username is taken.

Re: Anyone notice ebay is now assigning user names to new accounts?

I had this issue. Completely random user name that had nothing to do with what I wanted to sell. Not even any of my info was related to it.

I did change it and noticed that they flag the account for 30 days when a user changes their username. It also mentioned that a user can do this once per month.

Not sure how it might affect listings making it to the top of the best match results. My guess is that it would have a negative effect!

I know this particular new pp account I had was verified & no withdrawal limits now has a $500 limit & requires 2 verifications. It's all getting tough real fast. I am sad to say.

Re: Anyone notice ebay is now assigning user names to new accounts?

What 2 verifications?

joesshooze 01-28-2014 05:21 PM

Re: Anyone notice ebay is now assigning user names to new accounts?

Originally there was a choice of 3 & only 1 required to lift withdrawal limit. One I already had a confirmed bank account. Well now to get the re imposed $500 limit removed I have to have either a SS # or credit card. The latter of which is near impossible to do stealth.
