IP Address range on Virgin Media

I am logging IP Address changes on Virgin Media.

The same IP address has been repeated twice recently. I always change the last digit of the MAC address on the router.

As I have only started doing this I am a little surprised that the same IP has come up twice.

Is there something I need to do differently like changing the MAC address completely?

Thanks

So long as you change just one part of the MAC address you should generate a new IP. If you repeat the same MAC address within a certain period you will get the same IP address originally assigned to that MAC address (which can be very very handy)

I have been logging IP's on Virgin for around 14 months or so now and I get approx a 5% unwanted repeat rate.

Thank you that is very handy information.

I have only been altering the last digit so yes, it is possible I have repeated the same MAC address.

I had no idea the same MAC address could be possibly re-generate the same IP address in some occasions.

I have however found that changing some digits results in "invalid MAC address"

Trial and error I guess.....

Re: IP Address range on Virgin Media

Virgin media have sticky IP's and a lease time of upto 72 hours (may be longer, but this is the longest I have ever got on a IP address lease time)

I tend to stick to changing the double numbers, and avoid the letters.

For example

If it is 00:1F:02:14:E8:12

00:1F - I would leave

:02 - can be changed to anything from 01 to 99

:14 - can be changed to anything from 01 to 99

:E8 - 8 can be changed to anything from 1-9

:12 - can be changed from 01-99

Make sure you are always keeping track of the IP's so you never cross them over.

Thank you once again.

Yes I do keep track, that is very helpful indeed.
