a buyer opened a case begining of the month and i resolved the issue with him but he never closed the case or responded to the case. I dont want to escalate this since i would rather not have eBay involved. Do you know how long a case could be open for before it automatically closes?

Do not escalate let it close if you escalate buyer still can get a refund from ebay I think alot of buyers know this and wait for the seller to escalate to ebay.
I've had this happen quite a few times in the past year, I just leave it and it automatically closes without issue.
I'm pretty sure I read early 2013 that policy now is It doesn't hurt you anymore the have a eBay case OPENED or currently OPEN against you, it only hurts you if they have to get involved and find you at fault, so don't worry about it IMO.
