Playing Devils Advocate

Since everyone on here says to never do it I wouldn't, but to me it seems totally logical that a legitimate first time eBay seller would list as their first item, something like an iPhone. I'm thinking about people who have never done anything on eBay, and then all of a sudden their kid wants a new iPhone... well they see that they're "old" iPhone is worth a couple of hundred dollars, so they open up an acount and list it. Seems much more commonplace than someone who opens an account and orders 7 items for a toytal of $15. The latter seems very transparent as to what the new seller's real motive is. Whereas, the guy who lists the iPhone as his first item, just seems like someone who doesn't want to throw Mary's iPhone 4 away...

Thoughts?

Most of eBay is run by bots. Bots are programmed to look for certain things. You do not want to get the attention of said bots as they will then flag your account for manual review.

You need to build trust with eBay. This is done by small transactions gradually building to larger transactions.

iPhone is an expensive item and how does eBay or PayPal know you will actually send the item and not just run off with the money leaving them to fit the bill? How do they know its not a phake iPhone? ect ect

Re: Playing Devils Advocate

First flaw was using logic AND ebay in the same sentence.

I'll be blunt. If you did that listing, say 5 years ago, then ebay had a different reaction.

Many many ( & many) sellers tried the let's make a quick buck listing.

Not all had honorable intentions.

ebay changed its game plan.

We now know the consequences.

Forewarned is forearmed with ebay.

You're not playing the devil's advocate at all. When doing so you need to separate your thought process from your own personal bias. Your making this analysis based on your own familiarity with Ebay.

I don't think any of us when we were newbies first listed something as valuable and as sought after as an Iphone. We were not comfortable with the process and weren't sure what to expect. We did not know if the item would sell at all, at an agreeable price (if it was an auction), if we were going to get paid, how paypal and the withdraw process worked, and lots of other things. I doubt any of us first sold anything worth over a $100.

Also did you trust buying on ebay when you were a newbie? Did you go on Ebay and buy something for over $50 the first purchase you ever made? Truly new buyers are not familiar with the protection of Paypal and Ebay yet.
