What to do? Buyer wants to re-pay with different card

Item just sold.

Payment is made by the buyer. (Went through fine)

Buyer messages me saying they used the "wrong card" and wants to retry with a different one.

How do I go about arranging this? If I go to the transaction details page on PayPal and click 'Issue Refund', is he still going to have an option to check out and pay again on eBay?

Or should I send him a PayPal invoice, have him pay that with his preferred card, then issue a refund on his initial transaction?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Re: What to do in this situation?

If this is for an eBay item, I'm pretty sure you can refund the buyer and just reinvoice them through eBay (they could probably repay from the listing itself). Depends on the amount, but IMO it's not a good idea to refund and redo the transaction so quickly; it may get flagged by Paypal as "suspicious activity" because your receiving multiple payments from the same buyer or acting too quickly (paid, refund, paid). Unfortunately, that's just how the Paypal system works. Most buyers get it right the first time and everything else is counted as fraud check.

If you've gotten paid successfully and this is an important or high value item, I'd go with what you've got instead of making things more complicated.

Total amount was $335 USD. PayPal still holds my payments for a couple weeks though.

Good point about it raising flags. I'm just not sure what to tell the buyer at this point. Maybe tell him that it can cause issues for me & him if payments are refunded too quickly? Maybe not say anything and just ship it? I agree, I don't want to make this any more complicated. I just don't want him to file a chargeback in the future or something since he used the "wrong card" or have it reversed. Plus I'm noticing the address (USA) is unconfirmed on PayPal.

I'll let someone else chime in on this particular situation. You can check your coverage for seller protection with that unconfirmed address. Customer may just want to correct the unconfirmed address. There's still a chance you may be able to refund & repay without any problems. Always helps to do things by the book.

Since you are not the payment processor, I would tell him that he will need to call PayPal to fix it. Let him and PayPal deal with it.

You need to be careful. The buyer could easily file a chargeback to his card and if you ship it you are out the money and the item if you ship it. Just a friendly warning. :-)
