Closing a EIN tax id number?

Hey guys and girls,
Not sure which area I would ask this question in, but has anyone or does anyone know where or how I would "shut down or close my old tax ID number"?

I have one from my original eB account, which is useless to me now.

That tax ID can not be used on ebay again but the IRS does not close them exactly.

Here's the IRS site.

Internal Revenue Service

User friendly and free to use. Contact them for further help.

Good Luck.

Greenbean,
Thanks for the tip.
What do you mean by, the irs does not close the tax id number down?
(Do they just inactivate it?)
Anybody with experience on that?

Each case differs.

The holder of the tax ID number can discuss with the IRS what is the better course of action.

We had an tax ID made inactive as the business never started. This was in WA State.

You consult with a tax professional as well.
Good Luck

from my understanding you can never really close it. However, you can alert them that it is defunct and no longer applicable.

Canceling an EIN - Closing Your Account

Quote:

The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity. The EIN will still belong to the business entity and can be used at a later date, should the need arise.

If you receive an EIN but later determine you do not need the number (the new business never started up, for example), the IRS can close your business account.

To close your business account, send us a letter that includes the complete legal name of the entity, the EIN, the business address and the reason you wish to close your account. If you have a copy of the EIN Assignment Notice that was issued when your EIN was assigned, include that when you write to us at:

For those who have Inc. or DBA's. Like I use to, to close these out just don't pay the renew fee at the end of the year for it, whenever this might be.
---
Let's say 10 years down the road you want to open it back up again? You just pay a small fee for year each it was closed $15 give or take a few bucks here and there. It will be different state to state.

That is nice but subject is about closing a Tax ID number with the IRS (Federal Gov't) Not a state or local thing you are talking about.

Me I just didn't file taxes etc or pay my yearly fee to get it closed. I can always open it up now days and paying the last few years to reopen it. So he could just do that. So still on subject on closing.

Re: Closing a EIN tax id number?

I'm going through this exact thing right now.

1.) You can only close an EIN by submitting a letter to the IRS requesting the (business name and EIN #) be closed for whatever reason. This can only be done 1 month after it's creation

2.) After 1 month, the EIN can never been "officially" closed. What you have to do is send in a 1065 form which lets the IRS know not to expect any tax returns from this EIN from that point on.

3.) You then need to call your local or state office and let them know that business "snarkytits" is no longer operating (assuming it actually was in the first place).

Hope this helps.
