Subpoena
 

Hi,
Was wondering if anyone can offer any advice regarding the following
email I received today ?
I'm not sure what to make of it, I can only assume it's related to
vero issues, but the email address it was sent to is not related to
any ebay accounts that I have used in the past few years.
It looks genuine enough to me, and came from litenfo@microsoft.com.
Any thoughts ?

Microsoft has received a Subpoena demanding production of all business records associated with the following account: ****@hotmail.com .



The Subpoena requests that we release subscriber information and associated data, which may include the name, address, and other personal information entered by you when you created the account, as well as the account registration date, logs of Internet Protocol Addresses from which you created and have accessed the account, and other recorded data (collectively, “Subscriber Data”).

Pursuant to Microsoft’s policies and applicable laws governing the disclosure of Subscriber Data in response to legal process, we are giving you notice of this request and an opportunity to seek a protective order from the Court blocking or restricting disclosure of the data listed above, if you so desire.

If you believe that disclosure of the Subscriber Data should not be made by Microsoft, you MUST challenge this request by taking the appropriate action with the Court and send notice of such a challenge to: Microsoft Litigation Policy Enforcement.

Note that formal action in the court is required. Informal actions do not suffice to relieve Microsoft of its obligation to comply with the Subpoena. It is your responsibility to take the appropriate action and to ensure that we are notified of such action. We cannot advise you on what appropriate action is required and we strongly recommend that you seek the advice of an attorney in this regard.

If notice of a challenge is not received by Microsoft by November 17, 2008, we will be required to disclose the information described above to the subpoenaing party.

Just ignore it.

Yeah that's about all I can do...
I'm 99% sure that this must have originated from ioffer, it's the only account
I've used to sell anything, that's associated with that email address.
So, be careful on ioffer... ;)

Ignore it? It doesn't look like a phishing email.

If you put your home address in a free email account, then that's a lesson learned. Obviously change all info and wipe all personal messages.

But check the email headers first if it's ⊗⊗⊗⊗ and verify with microsoft if it's real.

If you're doing something funky on a free email account then connect with Tor. And why are you using hotmail? Their bloated, high bandwidth, slow interface is a pain with Tor and hotmail blocks most legitimate mail as spam.

My home address isn't in it.. but there's probably enough genuine info
to cause me problems, my date of birth for example.
Also they mention IP logs, assuming they go to the bother of tracking this
and forcing my ISP to cough up the info, that will lead to my home address.
I'm in the UK, so hopefully when they see I'm outwith the US, they'll drop
it. Not like I have a counterfeit factory on the go, I sold a few items.
Yes, definitely a lesson learned.

Kleidis, I don't know if you can change your birthday or not.

But if your ISP lets you edit your info electronically on the fly you can always change your info to something ⊗⊗⊗⊗ but that matches your AVS on your card for a month or two and then change it back.
