there's just nothing a small business can sell!

I have been looking on ebay for items to sell and i have come to the conclusion that there isn't anything for a small business to sell and make money on. When i first started my ebay i was selling acne extractors only because there wasn't any competition, now there's competitors selling from the U.S with lower prices! i literately had to lower my profit margin to 20 cents just to get some sales....

I use to sell ties for 4.99 (60 cent profit margin) but even that has come to a complete stop..my business is dead and with all these big companies coming on ebay and selling things at a way cheaper price (manly because they have contracts with USPS or other shipping companies so their shipping is extremely cheap) i can't compete.

Has anyone else been affected by big company competition?

I think small business have been pushed to local sales. I do way better selling off eBay with great profit margins. No returns and cash.

Always about reinventing yourself, what you were selling 3 years ago may not work anymore, the people that succeed are the ones that can think quick on their feet and reinvent their whole business motto if need be.

Unfortunately that's the way it goes. If none of us had competition we'd all be millionaires.

Whats your passion? Tailor your businesses to your passion(s). Just like any job if your not happy doing it, you will never see growth. All the things I sell are great, not over saturated and ..honestly I love doing it. The fact I like doing it drives my sales because people can tell I'm not some cheap seller making profits.

Believe it or not but on eBay this simple shift in thinking towards your products really makes a extraordinary difference. I rarely get returns and nasty feedback now.

Re: there's just nothing a small business can sell!

The problem is that too many people all want to sell the same items. They are all chasing those mythical sources of $100 iPhones (those sources do not exist).

You have to find niches. There are tons of profitable niches out there, but it takes a lot of research to find them. You will not be selling the most popular items, with 50 sales per day. A niche may mean selling 5 items per month. On the plus side, the sales will be more profitable. And most of us have found many, many niches.

You are correct that small businesses cannot compete with the Walmarts of the world. They can sell products cheaper than you can buy them for wholesale. Nothing is going to change that. So you have to concentrate on the stuff that they are not selling.

Some people buy closeouts of everyday items, like men's socks. They buy in huge quantities super cheap and make $1 or less on each sale, making their profits through volume.

Others find the more profitable niches where competition is limited. I NEVER stop looking for products to sell. I prefer niches, but have taken some closeout deals in my day.

Another way to approach it is to find something that is not selling well and market it in a different way. Many years ago, I bought hundreds of IBM Voice Pilots for $5 each. It was voice recognition software with a microphone in a cool looking box. It didn't work NEARLY as well as what we have today. But a lot of people were interested in it - just not at $99.

So, I came up with the headline "You Talk, It Types!" and wrote a nice little ad touting the benefits of voice recognition software and used pictures of the box HEAVILY to make the ad look cool. I had dutch auctions on these starting at $12.95 plus shipping and I listed 50 at a time. Within 7 days, I would have hundreds of bids and sold my 50 items for $20, $30 or even more. I did this as many times as I could. By the time all was said and done, I probably sold a couple thousand units. I bought up Voice Pilots from every closeout source I could find. When people tried to copy my ads, I would change the URL of my pictures to new ones and in place of the old pictures, I put up the most disgusting porn I could find! I know I caused a few people to lose their accounts (Back in the day, it was HARD to lose an account!) but I think they deserved it. Of course these days, I couldn't do that since eBay actually hosts the pictures.

The thing is, you have to think outside the box. You can buy all of the wholesale lists you want, but that will just lead to frustration. You have to out-think your competitors. Put a new spin on an old product. Find something that you only sell a few of each month but make some decent money on. That is the only way to be successful selling online at eBay.

Guess what? You order ties from China in large numbers (tens of thousands at least), and the unit price for that is a fraction of 1/6 of a dollar. I got this from a friend in the business two or three years ago.

"There are tons of profitable niches out there, but it takes a lot of research to find them"

What jeffweico said!

Personally I have no problem finding what to sell anymore. It used to be when I started. My main issue right now is not finding products but sudden lack of traffic due to eBay hiding my auctions and BINs for the past 3 month.

Honestly its really a losers mentality to even post this thread. Its great for discussion but if you need help deciding what to sell something is wrong...

The OP is not a loser, he is just frustrated. It is hard to figure it out sometimes.

I think Ebay/PayPal gets us down at times. Know few times a year I seriously think of throwing in towel but than I remember how much I make. Alot for 15-30 minutes it takes me 330 days a year. One month a year I work long hours when I am making new ideas or trying new stuff. One day I will have enough when I get other stuff ready enough to be able live off it. I am almost their so maybe in few years.

To make a thread saying there is nothing to sell on eBay I'm sorry but thats not a winners mentality.

The sky is the limit with eBay. *for the most part* haha.

If I am going to try to break into the wooden toothpick industry I imagine I won't make much money. Not trying to be a jerk but when you have tons of competition you have tons of completion. That is life. You have to work hard to find things to make a profit on. Like other members say it takes a ton of research. If it was easy everyone would be sitting back and selling on eBay.

To be honest, most the members I have talked to on here that make truly make. They are selling products and in categories that have a few sellers. Anyone can sell a toothpick. Collectibles, and other items have value. You just have to find what works and what doesn't. It is extremely hard.

Really Goldstealth! So how long ago is it since you were a newbie on here? Have you not been reading the posts on here on a daily basis from people who have just lost accounts on ebay and Amazon who have not much idea of how they are going to out of that predicament, you seriously think that they login to here and read the contradictory information and can suddenly see all the answers, sorry, it doesn't work like that, as we r being told constantly there r no easy answers and no one is really going to post on here the info that people want, everyone needs to search around themselves and then when they can't find things and come back on here to say as much, they get there heads bitten off! So yes, there r going to be people on here asking what could be good items to sell!

People do not like selling bulky items. There are a LOT of bulky items that can make you a mint.
