To add to the crazy stories, I've gotten items put into empty Glad trash boxes with a label on the side. I've seen items show up that weighed 10-12 pounds and only had a SINGLE SHEET of newspaper lying flat on the bottom of the box (was OK though!) or just a couple plastic shopping bags wrapped around it.

I am lucky not too far from me is an airport USPS it is open 24 hours/360 days(closed holidays of course). Nothing beats dropping it off at midnight and seeing it already on it's way by the time I wake up. They don't do deliveries, just a sort/acceptance facility so it goes from them --> plane immediately.

The trash bag story is bad. Definitely if you are closer to a major airport you can drop items off late especially if you know people. And have them go out. Great connections!
