Will you get suspended for too many returns?

Does ebay suspend you if you get more then 8 returns in 12 months? So far I have "6". All items were new, but non of the buyers are honest and dont want to pay for return shipping. I've tested each and every one of them and resold them as used.

None of them left neg feedback or opened paypal cases but I just have 6 returns of "defective".

In the UK these defects do have a negative impact on your account, crazy i know. There is a workaround though but you will have to look for it.

6 is 5 too many.

What did you do about preventing damage to your account?

You can not afford to be nice to buyers any longer.

Really depends on what % of overall sales that is.

If its 6 out of 10,000 your doing well

If its 6 out of 10 you have issues.

Exactly......6 out of 100 or less, and you are in trouble!

If you refuse returns they can just opened paypal cases right? This is my legit account over 16 years old and never had issues but now im worried in the next few months I can lose it.

It is 6 out of 90. If you have over 100 transaction do they increase the amount of returns?

Re: Will you get suspended for too many returns?

Best thing you can do in your case is get that % down.

Sell cheap items fast to get the stats back in your favour and work out why you are getting so many returns.

If the buyers close the case, does it still count against you?

Yes - they can always open cases so you need to communicate with buyers actively.

As for over 100 transaction, no they don't increase the amount of returns. 6 out of 90 is a high %age! Did you identify the problem? Quality issue?

Last 3 returns:
1) (new keyboard-damaged in shipping)really? a damaged cardboard box flap and a spacebar key that you can pop back on?
2)notebook computer(new). Buyer did not want it anymore so he claimed defective. I tested it and confirmed working. Resold and no issues. Its been almost 30 days since I resold it.
3)projector(new). Buyer claimed defective and would not show video. tested and works 100%.

This might sound like a dumb question. But if you allow returns and don't have a case opened against you. Does that count against your ebay score? I am super confused about this topic. Thank you

Even if you get a "shipping update request" it counts as a defect.

Just state in your listing 15pct restocking fee just to cover your shipping loss this will cut out most of the losers jist looking to scam over good sellers. Its better just to accept tje return amd move on dont draw more attention to yourself

Re: Will you get suspended for too many returns?

I am currently running at a 40-50% return rate.
Buyers know how to play the system so they use words such as "not as described" "defective''. When you read their full request information they go further to say, "it is defective because the size do not fit them" or "not as described because I am 5 feet 2 inches and the dress is too long for me".
All my dresses come with there own size chart and customers refuse to check this.

Re: Will you get suspended for too many returns?

While I agree that eBay is probably a little bit overboard with the way they handle "defects" - it is almost impossible for a buyer to ask a question without it counting as a defect - some of the return rates mentioned are extremely high.

Nearnu - a 40% - 50% return rate is unheard of. This cannot be simple buyer dishonesty, there is SOMETHING going wrong here and you need to figure out what it is. Now, if you sold 2 items, it IS possible that 1 would be returned and therefore your return rate is 50%, but if you are selling in volume and experiencing this, then there is a problem.

To the OP - According to a survey by Internet Retailer Magazine, the average rate of return for all online businesses is 3%. I am not aware of the breakdowns by category (different categories have different return rates) but yours seems high to me at more than twice the average. Your return rate is 6.66%

In order to maintain Top Rated Seller status, you must have a defect rate below 2%. To keep your account, your defect rate must be below 5%. If it rises above 5%, eBay gives you a certain amount of time to fix it, but doing so is difficult. To get your current return rate of 6.66% down to 5%, you need to have a total of 120 sales, meaning you must sell 30 more items with ZERO returns. Ideally, you should be looking to lower it even further than the 5% threshold.

My suggestion would be to sell some things that are not prone to shipping damage or returns. Something like HDMI cables, which you can test before you send them. I am just using that as an example, but whatever you sell, the items should be cheap, and in perfect condition. You can still make a profit on your sales, but profit is not the goal here. If you lost $1 on each sale, at least you will have saved your account and it will have cost you $30. But TRY for a profit.

Going forward, you need to figure out what is causing the high rate of returns and fix the problem. I suspect there is more going on here than simple buyer dishonesty. Return rates are simply not normally that high. By any chance are you selling store returns, or shelf-pulls? If so, you should start examining them more closely and consider selling them as used. I have no idea what you are selling, of course, that was just a thought that popped into my head.

The other possible explanation is that maybe this rate of returns is normal for your category, but no matter how you look at it a 6.66% return rate is going to be a problem. If you had the 8 returns you mentioned at 100 sales, then your return rate would be 8% and I don't think you can afford for that to happen if you want to keep the account.

Re: Will you get suspended for too many returns?

It all depends on the sales history of the account.

One time I got a mc999 selling suspended indefinitely suspension from just 2 negative feedbacks. So in my opinion it's way better to have returns (without open cases or low dsr's) than having negative feedback.
