Gift Cards on Ebay
 

I tried searching for this, all I found is which gift cards to use on ebay, my question is why are visa gift cards selling well above face value on Ebay. What is the catch?

Some people use it as a cashout method.

If its sent via email then some will be scam buyers.

ebay lets them sell so they know which accounts to limit

Well there are people selling 200 dollar visa gift cards for 280, and by seeing there history they sold quite a few. I wont post there links but its not hard to find.

Who wouldn't want to do that, especially if you use a credit card that has high rewards and or cash back. You win on both ends.

But as the old adage goes, if its to good to be true, it usually is. That is why I came on this board too see if someone can enlighten me on this matter.

Sadly, sometimes these sellers get stiffed by the buyers too - seen that happen - chargebacks...

That would be my fear. Who cares if you make great profit, if you lose 10% of your total sold items to chargebacks.

FAR to easy for a buyer to claim the "card had a $0 balance" and if eBay makes them ship it back, I guarantee it WILL have a $0 balance when you get it.

the gift card business on ebay has always boggled my mind anyway, I see people bidding $24 for a $25 gift card with $1 shipping, it makes no sense to me why you would risk getting a gift card with no money on it etc when you aren't getting a deal on it. These people are paying $25 for a $25 gift card they have to wait a week to get when they could just go to walmart and pick it up. I could see buying one for 10 or 20 bucks under value but anything less than that and it seems it just wouldn't be worth the risk.

because the only person who will pay $26 for a $25 gift card is a person who is stealing.

I'm sure there are some scams, but I don't think they are all, if you look on eBay under sold Gift cards, there are pages after pages of cards being sold everyday and as mentioned $100 GC is being sold for $150 or $200 for $280

There was a similar thread a month or so ago and they had a link up and I couldn't believe how many were being sold for above value

Not all are scams, so true - there is increased change of scams but not every buyer is a scammer for sure....some can be genuine

people cashing out stolen cc, pp accounts buy these.

and people selling them know this as a service offered.

im sure there are a few sellers selling off christmas gifts though

If people want to take risks, encourage them to do so and report their findings, that way we can all learn.

Doesn't matter what you pay for it if you intend to spend the card and then get your money back by opening a SNAD.

Seriously, though...

I saw this too and I've sold a few but they never went for more than the asking price, and usually went for less.

I think that, as some of the previous posters said, the buyer is using a stolen card or hijacked account, they spend the money and are gone before anybody can do anything.
