Web beacons and your IP address?

Does opening a piece of mail with a web beacon will logged into a site automatically trigger a flag? Also does the beacon show IP addresses?

As long as you're using GMAIL, you have nothing to worry about.

actually the one I opened was a text style message but I am not sure if they could put a beacon in there?
