We long time sellers are dealing with DRASTIC margin crunches. Especially on high dollar manufacturer direct items. Many factors contribute to this but 12% goes to ebay and paypal off of the gross including domestic shipping. Five years ago it was 9% of the first $100 and then a tier system as the value gone up.

Second is a weak world economy especially for the upper middle-class. Expendable income is wiped out for many of those people.

Most recently is shipping cost for items over 1lb. It is insane. What was $12.00 last December sometimes cost me $50 now. Shipping has outpaced margins in many areas. I looked into opening a warehouse in Memphis for strategic shipping. I actually moved there this past March and April and very well may revisit that idea after the first of the year.

Then for many of us we have to compete with China sellers and China government subsidized next to free international shipping.

Those are just a few issues us long time ebayers see now that we did not see a decade ago.

People shop on Amazon when they want QUALITY. They shop on eBay when they want LOW PRICE.

Everyone knows that the standard on ALL Amazon.com orders is VERY high, for both Amazon and sellers, and people are willing to pay a premium for that.

If eBay prices keep going up, which they will, even the most basic sellers will need to rethink the whole thing. I guess for your average Joe Blow it doesn't make much difference because they just sell **** that they find around the house, its all extra money anyway but for small business or people who are starting out, it gets very difficult.

If they keep operating the same way and keep going in the same direction then I can only see it becoming a fancy version of Gumtree or Craigslist and they'll most likely sell out to the East and it'll just be an online shopfront for Asian factories that currently need to tap into the market via resellers.

Amazon is for your top end stuff, quality purchases and eBay will slowly keep getting cheaper and cheaper with just Joe Blow being able to make money.

They are responsible for moving moneys, are controlled by AML and similar laws. EB is not responsible for anything, so has much lower responsibility, thus lower requirements.

ebay fees don't bother me, just annoys me how biased they are in favour of buyers and their banning for no reason.
All companies are the same: Google, yahoo, facebook, paypal all started off free/cheap then after spending loads of cash and getting popular they put their fees up.
Ebay is much cheaper than facebook or google, I'd love to see anyone get the same sales with adwords or fb ads for less than the 15% you pay ebay+paypal or amazon.

Can definitely see ebay going byebyes in the next few years though, think thats why they split up, paypal has so much more potential to make them big cash.
I don't use them to buy with much anymore but they basically charge 7-8% on foreign transactions once you take into account their exchange rate, then 4-5% on your sales once you take into account the 20p per transaction, thats around 10% of your sales going to paypal depending on your profit margins just for them processing payments

I was selling North Face, Some may know, some may not, its one of the best items to sell on Ebay...Unfortunately there is only a few years left in this niche as competition is everywhere, and the real killer is they are expanding the NF outlets at a rapid pace,so now virtually anyone can make massive profits. At one time there were only 6 outlets across the US...I was killing it.
