Will ebay ask for proof of address and id if I have aname not attached to the house address I'm using? I don't want to have to use someone's name and screw them over if I get banned.

eBay has never asked me for proof of address, not in UK anyway.
Maybe things work differently in US.

You have to go very slowly and use the website search for things a lot. Don't list anything for sale for a few months and it is better to buy things first so you can get some positive feedback. Whatever makes you look more like a usual "new" eBay user is better.

I only notice they try confirm address if new user try to list "multi variation style"...but even if fail the confirmation, account still good, just cannot yet list variations.
