Which Windows flavor will you be going with for the VMWares?

You can run VM's on any computer. There are no special requirements.

When you create a VM you dedicate a portion of your RAM and hard drive to the VM. The VM cannot use more RAM or HDD/SSD than you have allotted to it.

VMWare does NOT use a lot of RAM or hard drive space. I'm not sure where you heard that, but it's not true. When I have one of my VM's powered on it uses 512mb out of my 4 gigs of RAM and no more than 10gb of my hard drive.

I'm running Win XP - 512MB Ram, and 10GB hdd per VMWare

Same here, and they run flawlessly on a 6 year old Toshiba laptop.

Are you using internal HDD or External?

Re: What kind of Windows laptops are good fo vm?

Just the standard 500gb internal spinny drive, lol.

I have redundant backups in various forms of course, but I run all 23 of my vm's straight from my old school hard drive. While they all have a max virtual hard drive size of 10gb, none of them are any larger than 3gb so they don't take much space at all.

Right on, I'm running an external 500gb Hdd.

I'm assuming you are using USB 3.0 for the external HDD? I've run VM's from a flash drive (SSD) on USB 2.0 and they were really laggy..

..one wrong move on that USB 3.0 flash drive plugged into the USB port and you're restarting the whole VM regardless of speed. If I had to use USB I'd get the smallest one physical size wise to avoid bumpage...

Definitely I'd personally have 8gb and something with 4 or more cores on the processor if possible. The SSD would make it faster of course. Brand is a personal choice. I'm a Mac / Dell guy my wife loves Acer. I've had too many HP's video card crash and destroy motherboards to recommend them - from the old DV6000's to the DV7 to the new red HP Special Edition Dr. Dre Beats - all boat anchors (should've had Squaretrade)

I currently use a stripped version of Win7 in my VM's because honestly I have the room on my SSD to do it. XP would make a great choice due to smaller footprint - I think 8-10GB per XP VM would suffice.

I just don't understand why SSD drives are not more standard? They make old laptops seem better then brand new with the newly acquired speed.

If someone pays me to "upgrade" their computer, the first thing I change is to SSD drive and people cant believe that the ""old faithful" can run so fast. And the price has gone down to a considerable point.
