Dongle for IP?
 

Whats a good/cheap dongle in the UK?

I have 2 computers and rather than having to restart my wifi router every time I need my IP address to change I would prefer to just have a permanent IP address for both my separate accounts. I plan to use my regular wifi with my laptop and a dongle for my computer.

Let me know the pros and cons of using a dongle if any, or any better alternatives in your option. Be good to hear from people in the UK as I think its a bit different overseas.

I'm not 100% sure but I heard JamesNorth mention a Dongle Provider that offered 100GB for cheap price.

Dongle i.ps are dynamic, and need to be recorded after each use in case you ever expand and have more than 1 account per dongle.

3 isn't the cheapest but is the best IMO and worth the extra initial cost.

Am I right in thinking you just keep record of all the IP's used incase it gives you the same IP twice? Or is that not right?

Basically yes. If you operated 2,3,4 or more accounts off the same dongle then you wouldn't want an i.p showing up on those accounts that has already been used on account 1, in an ideal world.

Of course if account 1 brings up an i.p already used in account 1 then that is fine.

That is one of the main reasons 3 is good. It has a much larger i.p range per dongle than say, vodafone. Therefore the chances of repeating the same i.p are more remote which will save time in the long run.

I've tried all the main service providers and agree with realdeals on 3 mobile being the best for IP range.

Might be worth checking the network coverage in your area before going ahead though as there is nothing more infuriating than a slow broadband service.

O2 is also very good.

I tried Vodafone but the coverage was so poor that I cancelled it (despite the claimed 4G signal).

EE had a very limited IP range. This may just be down to my specific area but one or two others have tried EE as well and also found this to be the case.

Another vouch for 3 here.

I have contracts with all big providers and 3 give much larger range of ip's then any other.

Just need to make sure you track all ip's used when logging into accounts.

Okay that makes sense. do you pay monthly for it or is it a one time payment? Never used a dongle before so have no idea how it works.

Is there much difference in the speed of internet when using a dongle compared to wifi?

You can have a dongle where you can top up just like a mobile phone (pay as you go) or you can sign up for a monthly contract, usually 12,18 or 24 months.

I have contracts with ee, three, Vodafone and 02. I also use a pay as you go dongle on t-mobile.. (I create a lot of stealths). Three is the better out of the lot.

Speed is slower then normal wi-fi's but... Does the job!

Oh I never knew you could get them pay as you go, think thats my best option.

Just depends, three have huge ip range and I only pay £17 per month for 25gb.

I am on PAYG with 3. When starting out PAYG is a good way of testing the signal is going to be OK where you live/work, rather than being tied into a contract long term.

As for speed.

Well it is kinda funny as my 3 dongle now is actually quicker than my B.T broadband package was when I was living in a rural area a few years ago. You could actually stream fairly comfortably with 3 dongle also with no buffering.....although this works out very expensive and kills the data quickly.

Yeah I live in a rural area so I will need to check how the signal will be in my area. Does the IP just change every time you plug the dongle in?

Yes, all the dongles I know of are dynamic.

Yes everytime, but you just need to make sure you cross ip's if you are intending to have multiple accounts.

I can't offer any advise on service providers in UK, but here is a comparison of speed standards for 3G, 4G, and Wifi.

• To be qualified as 3G, a network’s peak transfer rates only need to reach 200 kilobits per second (Kbps).
• 4G networks must offer transfer rates 100 megabits per second (Mbps) when users are “mobile,” for example, in cars or buses, and 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) when users are stationary
• Wifi will naturally depend on the speed of your home internet connection. Most wifi enabled devices on the market today have at least an 802.11n card installed. The 802.11n standard has a theoretical max speed of 600mbps. Meaning if you have a gigabit internet connection in your home, you could get download speeds of 600mbps over wifi.

Just looking at the 'three' dongle I'm hoping to buy it today because I've just got my new computer. I need one with 3G as I don't get 4G in my area but they have three options that I can see on the website: 1GB, 3GB or 12GB preloaded but I've never had a dongle before so I have no idea how it works. So if I bought the 1GB that would mean I wouldn't be able to top it up with anymore than 1GB? Also it doesn't say anywhere how much it is to actually top it up? So if anyone knows the prices let me know.

As far as the top ups go it is £3 for 500mb 24hr pass, £10 for 1GB valid for 30 days and £15 for 3gb valid for 30 days. There is I believe a 7gb for £25, but that is a lot of data to use in 30 days if you are just starting out.

Once you have a dongle you can top up with any amount.

The 1gb one to start with would be fine.
