eBay/Paypal = Bad Combo
I am posting this message under eBay discussions since there doesn't seem to be an eBay/Paypal option except for eBay/Paypal International.
I've been a Paypal member in excellent standing and verified for over 10 years. I never had charge offs and only a rare return (3 returns in the past 10 years).
During that time I have been selling random stuff on eBay. I noticed that over the years, eBay has gradually moved from individual selling to preferring actual businesses and has modified its operation to reflect such by offering better protection for buyers.
Paypal has jumped on board with this philosophy and 'wants to protect buyers' from shady sellers.
While I certainly can understand the underlying rationale, as an individual seller, I (and a multitude of other none-business sellers) am left with having to suffer the consequences of this decision.
Case In Point:
On May 3 2016 I sold a collectors item through eBay for a decent amount (over $700). Today, my funds are still on hold at Paypal which shows a release day of the funds as May 24 2016.
Attempts I made to get the funds released (or a portion thereof) have been futile, despite the item sold was already delivered.
Both eBay and Paypal state that because of the high amount, they wish to ensure the buyer is protected and totally satisfied with the purchase made.
Again, I fully understand that concept but how about my protection as a seller? Why must I wait for such a lengthy period of time to receive my funds (particularly with a well established eBay and Paypal account)? What if the buyer requests a refund once he has the product? Where comes my protection in play?
From personal experience it has become obvious that both eBay and Paypal now prefer to deal with sellers who are established businesses. For such entities, having access to $700 quickly after selling an item isn't a problem.
Such businesses carry inventory, have staff and more than likely have adequate operating capital available to pay operational costs while funds are being released over time.
As for individual sellers, such as myself, we are clearly screwed by this new business model that both eBay and Paypal are now operating under. For such persons, using the eBay/Paypal combo to earn additional income has become a bad combination; this does not take in consideration the absorbent fees now being charged by both Paypal and eBay.
Based on experience with the eBay and Paypal combo, I believe time has come for individual/part-time sellers to liquidate their goods elsewhere.
The only question is: where?
Where would a part-time, individual seller go to hog his merchandise without having to suffer from the scrutiny that is clearly intended for large retailers?
