Canceling an item and defect rates

When you as a seller cancel an order, you have 2 choices:

1) Cancel order because you as the seller are out of stock and unable to fulfill the order
2) Cancel order because of a problem with buyer's address

From what I am reading, if you cancel the order because you are out of stock, then this will affect your defect rate.

So my question is, can you get around this by simply selecting option 2 (Cancel order because of a problem with buyer's address)???

And if you can, then why the hell would anybody select the option to cancel because they are out of stock?

It notifies buyer of your reason... Defect rare doesn't matter for seller standards, but it def still has to effect the search placement. The only items I cancelled were both $10 and smaller than a dime, but they still fault you

Cancel due to out of stock will affect your defect rate and your account will be restricted if your performance are below standard. My account was restricted due to this reason. Now I find a way to go around this. You make up some excuse to customer for example item is damaged or defective and need couple of weeks to restock. They will ask to cancel order. Then you can choose option 2. I learn my lesson hard way.

My performance is below standard and my account is not restricted, despite two cancellations out of 295 transactions, so ymmv. But it could further lower search placement

Sad all these rules ebay put in place to 'help' really just make both sellers and buyers feel the need to lie...if there weren't so many systems in place eBay would be a much better place

There used to be other systems - way way back - but fraudulent parties have, of course, made things more stringent.

But what I'm saying is, without communicating with the buyer ahead of time, you can just click "cancel order" and then select "There was a problem with the buyers address" and it will automatically refund the buyer and cancel this order. Are you guys saying this will not have an effect on my defect rating? If that's the case, why the heck would anyone cancel an order and select the "I'm out of stock" option??

Thats interesting... what I was saying is the buyer receives an email stating 'there was a problem with your address and the seller has sent a refund'.. not sure if they can leave feedback, but good to know it automatically refunds

customer have to accept your request for cancellation. If you dont communicate with them, they could leave you bad feedback.
