Re: comcast/xfinity modem issue

You have to call Comcast and have them configure the new modem.

Re: comcast/xfinity modem issue

They won't let you have 2 modems on at the same time, because that means you would have two public IP's from Comcast. In order for that to work you would have to have 2 internet subscriptions with Comcast, which they won't let you do unfortunately. I tried all of this when I first got with Comcast. I assumed all I needed to do was use a coax splitter and hook up two modems. But it's not that simple. You have to "login" your modem with your Comcast account, and they will only allow one modem per account.

It wouldn't be worth paying two internet bills in my opinion. You'll just have to keep switching routers if that's the route you're taking.

Okay, just to be clear then I am only using 1 modem at a time and completely powering down the other modem. Am I going to have to log into my comcast account each time I try to switch my modem? If so then you're obviously right & it's not worth it. I just want to be clear that I'm choosing the right option. When I bought the cheap modem from best buy I just assumed you could go back and forth between modems with no hassle. I mean I already use a separate computer and a separate router for ebay so figured heck I could use a separate modem.

Out of curiosity since I'm paying a monthly rental fee for my new Comcast modem I just got. Would I be better off going back to best buy and buying a good " modem only" from them? Should fix a lot of the issues I'm having correct? As always thank you guys so much for the responses. Would be in full out panic mode if not for you guys & this forum

You will not be able to use two modems at the same time. Comcast will only configure one modem per account. You can get a separate business account for around $50 a month and they will supply a modem only if you request it. Not all residential addresses will be allowed to have a business account though.

If you want to do this, return the rental, save yourself $10.00 a month and just use your purchased modem and routers. No need to use the Xfinity All In One at all.

Im with MM. If you have decent verizon service, hard to beat a flashed Mifi for running a few accounts that you dont have to be logged into all day.

To be honest only reason I wanted to stick with the modem only option was just because it's what I've been using for stealth since I've started. Kind of a comfort thing for me personally. As of right now I really don't know much about mifi. Obviously, I'm going to do some research on it now if it works as well as you guys say.

But for me to get things back up and running today would my best option be to go and buy a better "modem only" at best buy and hook it up? I just want to be able to log into my accounts to make sure everything is okay. Also, to print out any sales ive had over past day and a half. Feels weird not logging in for so long haha. If this is the best option do you guys have any recommendations on which modem to buy? Want it to be as powerful as the one Comcast gave me so I can return that one as well. Without noticing any drop off in Internet speeds or anything.

Let me give you a rundown on how a mifi works as far as an IP.
Step 1: Turn On
Step 2: Get online
Step 3: Log IP
Step 4: Turn Off
Step 5: Repeat Steps 1 - 4

Re: comcast/xfinity modem issue

Just to throw a little more info out there on the comcast/gateway/modem/router/IP issues i am on comcast/xfinity in atlanta area.

I got tired of paying $10 a month for the gateway and bought a new linksys cm3008 modem and put a netgear wnr1000v2 router that I already had behind it.

This was a blessing in disguise as before I even got my new rig up and running I was PayPal limited which lead me here so now I need it more than ever LOL!

It's working beautifully so far and I can simply change the mac address on the basic settings page of the router and have a new IP in like 30 seconds or so.

I am starting on the stealth path now obviously for PP/EB and logging my IPs etc but I also log the mac beside the IP as well.

The reason for this is if you use a previous mac address and the matching IP address is available you will get the same IP back.

Not a big deal in the scheme of things but just passing along knowledge.

And BTW my new rig is clocking that same 90M/13M speed the rental gateway did so no complaints there.

ALSO FWIW my account devices only show the modem and don’t show the router.

Hope this info may help someone in the future.

ALSO @johnnyreed22 would be interesting to know how your rig is working for you after these months.

HINT: if you’re going to buy stuff make sure it’s on comcast/xfinity list of approved equipment.

HINT: just plug it in and go to your browser and follow instructions is a LOT easier than dealing with their support.
There is a lot of setup and troubleshooting help etc online on their website for customer owned rigs.
