WSJ: EBay Retreats in Web Retailing

There was a huge article in the wall street journal this morning, front page, on eBay admitting they made a huge mistake in going retail. Basically it was a meeting to convince shareholders that they were going to go back to the ebay of old. The full article is online somewhere, below is just the snippet. It goes on to say that they are moving away from competing with amazon and other retailers, and back to smaller sellers and auctions instead of fixed priced listings.

I thought it would already be posted in this forum too. Its a pretty big story if it made the front page of the WSJ. And to be honest I am sure it will have a pretty great effect on most of the sellers in this forum, stealth or not. I think its a great day for eBay sellers. The article made it sound like Donahoue is BEGGING.

I'm working on a replacement for eBay, which will be unlike anything seen before, in fact it will make eBay look like an old useless toy. There will be no fees what so ever, money would be made in other ways. There will also be no cost associated with hosting.

The article states that Ebay sales have been steadily in downward spiral and they are starting to hurt enough to change things around. They also admitted the mistake of buying Skype and are trying to get rid of it now. However, they also said that some of the losses Ebay suffered was compensated by PayPal gains doing "extremely well" ? ...Not for long, I think.
One thing they touched on in the article and that kinda worries me, is encouraging more used items auctions and not new ones with BIN. After a long time Ebay admits that Amazon.com is main competitor who took a chunk of this business from Ebay. On one of accounts I will be selling only new items via my Ebay store...so now I worry they may impose limitations in some form...........

They wont attract sellers back until they reverse the feedback policy and lower the fees.

I think the worst thing of eBay is the forcing of PayPal, stalking of merchant account holders before approval, and how it only allowed moneybookers and paymate after it corrupted them completely.

Hmmmm, PayPal is doing good. No wonder, they forced the PayPal only thing onto us. Previously, may I remind you, we could accept Checks and Money orders. How this works?

If I had $800 watch, I would definitely request a money order from my buyer.

Now, I have to use PayPal and risk being ripped off. Actually it is guaranteed that I will be ripped off. Thus why should I sell my watch on eBay? No reason. In fact BAD idea.
