No selling fees for private sellers and balance held in ebay account ?

I'm sure you have all read the new changes coming in to play from today.

No selling fees for private sellers.

And from the 16th October payment from any sales you make will be held on your ebay balance for you to use as credit to buy items off other sellers on ebay or postage labels etc unless you manually initiate a withdrawal. No more scheduled payouts for private sellers.

What does this mean for stealthers ?

i think they are trying to adopt a paypal approach with the aim of eventually phasing paypal out as a payment method. They want complete control of their site. They should be prepared to offer instant withdrawal into bank account if they introduce this.As a manual request should enable funds go straight into bank accounts within seconds and not 1 to 3 working days .

and also a sign of desperation too...they are seeing people migrating to other platforms.Never thought id see the day ebay scraps fees.Very very big decision, either ways more money in sellers pockets for now but their ultimate objective is becoming their own payment processor, watch youll probably be charged a withdrawal percentage fee in the long run once they scrap all other payment methods out.

Re: No selling fees for private sellers and balance held in ebay account ?

what is a private seller?
Is it just for UK?
This has nothing to do with Paypal, back when EbAY was using Paypal, the buyer payment is deposited into our Paypal account and we can use the fund to print shipping label, buy from Ebay and NON EBAY sellers or pay for meals in a restaurant. or send it to another paypal account.
Now what Ebay is saying is that the fund can only be used to buy from Ebay sellers or print shipping labels,so if you need to buy from WMT,AMZN or your supplier outside Ebay, the fund is not available

Re: No selling fees for private sellers and balance held in ebay account ?

i said its taking the paypal approach. They want to be the only payment processor on their platform.funds go into ebay balance, and then it can be used to either pay for items on ebay or withdrawn. There is a bigger plan behind the scenes and its not 'saving sellers money".

I think its a little deeper than the PayPal approach, any private sellers who are selling a decent amount of stuff will be forced into business accounts with lower selling thresholds before being made to go over

When companies and individuals take such measures, it can only mean one thing...desperation..Buyers are migrating to Amazon and Vinted, which means sellers are also migrating to those platforms

Re: No selling fees for private sellers and balance held in ebay account ?

if the ebay fund can only be used on eBAY,
THIS will kill those retail arbitragers who need the money to buy from AMZN,WMT or anyone outside Ebay.
To be like Paypal, they would have to offer foreign exchange,a debit card to tap your Ebay fund backed by y our bank fund, use it as a credit card and get a 1% rebate ,allow you to keep your fund in different currencies,I doubt Ebay wants to do all that.

Private sellers are not migrating to Amazon.

Amazon have made it clear they don't want them. They want businesses selling new goods.

This has got nothing to do with payment control, they don't have control of ANY buyer payment method.

To have complete control buyers would have to forfeit Paypal, Mastercard, Visa etc - never happening.

Amazon allows private sellers that sell new products, just as there are many private sellers on eBay that also sell new goods who have indeed migrated to Amazon...I'm one of them

Re: No selling fees for private sellers and balance held in ebay account ?

Amzn buyers are mostly interested in new or like new items (books ,items they can use in daily life ) not collectibles or antiques, may be in books they have antique books and manuscripts.
Also AMZN pictures are not good enough to display antiques/collectibles.

There's nowhere near as many private sellers as there was on amazon 5 years ago.

In the short term you might get away with it, clearly you must be a very new seller. Eventually they will demand you convert to a business either by way of turnover, volume or recognizing you're selling new goods from a private account.

In any event, my comment stands. Private sellers are not migrating to Amazon and Amazon, in reality, do not want them.

When APPL starts selling on AMZN,2 refurbished AAPL sellers have to move to Ebay.
AMZN does not want small sellers,we aint worth their time.
I tried to sell brand new jewelry once,AMZN said thanks but no thanks.

Sounds like Mercari almost....

So where would they make up for the lost revenue?

No more %13 fee will be nice. Having to manually initiate the payout seems like a good trade off. I wonder what the catch is

From what I am reading ... interest, as private sellers will now have an e-wallet that money has to be kept in a pot somewhere right.

Next year they are introducing a "buyer fee" possibly a subscription service like Amazon Prime. They already have eBay Plus in Australia.

I think it's a clever move by ebay and not one of desperation as it could be viewed as.

Interest on buyers held funds and a likely increase on spending on the site as ebay will surely sell the ease with which funds can be used to buy from their mainstream businesses. (rather like paypal funds back in the day)

Then there's promotions, they wont be free will they? Can't see ebay giving great visibility to them.

And there's also just the advertising opportunities to ebay. Attract new private sellers and try and hurt the likes of Vinted too. Might even get some new business sellers out of it too.

It's already been trialed in Germany and was deemed a success, how they quantified 'success' that is unknown.

True private sellers are now a small part of their revenue stream, set to get much smaller and they know it. What have they got to lose?

Lets not kid ourselves, in the extreme scenario where crushed the likes of Vinted out of business they might have a fee 'rethink' but I simply see this as an opportunity to capitalise on a dying part of their business.

Hey, they might even put up business seller fees (again) to cover it. :)

Re: No selling fees for private sellers and balance held in ebay account ?

they are just turning managed payments into new paypal , paypal was sold at a high price and they decided to create a new paypal using their market position

however , I would not use ebay balance to buy stuff on ebay. it is a known red flag , not just for stealth accounts but for all accounts , people who used to use their paypal balance received from ebay to buy on ebay were under increased risk of suspension

They didn't create a 'new Paypal', they just wanted to take control of payment management. You can't, and probably never will, be able to spend your managed payments funds on other sites like you can Paypal.

How on earth can you say it is a known red flag, it hasn't even been implemented yet!

It is complete rubbish to say ALL accounts were at risk of suspension by using paypal funds to buy from ebay. Indeed, I don't even think it applied to stealth accounts, stealthers loved the option.

It's a great initiative by ebay and has pretty few, if any, downsides. Why the need for unfounded scare-mongering?
