Ebay seller makes 100k a year - makes national news

I swapped drudgery to earn £100,000 selling bits and bobs on eBay | Mail Online

What do you all think when articles like this make the mainstream? A flood of new Ebay sellers will hit the market no doubt!

Definitely doable but not everyone is successful - typical feel-good story.

p.s. her kids need better haircuts /done

Good, they can hit the market, get zapped with MC999 and still leave room for me to sell.

It seems to me that 3 years ago she had a turn over £100,000 @ 25% profit. Commendable to her, but that is less than she was earning before.

The husband then quit his job. I would guess that at the time they were a lot less well off

I wonder how well she has done in the interim 3 years.

Not a lot of money for the hours they were doing. I would say they don't know about stealth and I hope that stays the way for many people. If I did eBay full time I reckon I could the profit she made in 2 1/2 months...maybe less if it was a busy period.

Made 28k working a job.

Now makes 100k working from home.

I would work 2-3 times the hours to work from home like she did and not have to go to work for someone for a lousy 28k for a years work.

Dang woman, you can make that in a month if you would just follow us.

Those kids look like they are living in the 70s. They just need some bright clothes and a bong.

Re: Ebay seller makes 100k a year - makes national news

I want to see the day her paypal account gets nailed with a limitation and 180 days to withdraw funds. She will wonder what she did wrong and we will all see her on these forums writing her life's story, post a few more times and just disappear.

Ebay will see some new people join when they read that article but then it will get back to normal until the next journalist writes the next ebay fill good story. Nothing new, journalists have to write some feel good stories after writing so many articles on deaths, crime, and world mayhem.

***added after reading article

I dont know but I somehow dont believe this story or her story. I read the entire thing and he said she works "working family-friendly hours". I call that bull #$%^. Its nice that she decided to do the ebay thing and makes good money at it. It takes a special kind of person to do that. Not knowing if your items will sell and not knowing if you will ever make any money on it. But working family friendly hours selling that much and only 2 people doing it. Honey, I dont think so.

During Christmas of this year was the busiest ever for me. I would have over 50 items per day for several weeks and I will worked 6 hours just on packaging items. Then a few more hours in listing items. If I didn't ship items out for a few days, which I sometimes did, my day would be double that. And I had some help from my nephew and niece. They would slap on the shipping sticker on every package or cut pieces of tape for me. Their last help was taking the packages to the Prius, seats down, then I would drive to the Post office.

She makes over 100,000pounds/year, that is over $165,000usd/year. I made less than half of that this year. and still worked hard. The queen of ebay, Sandy, has to deal with 20-30 accounts, dont know her learning power (dont want to know), but yet she doesn't work "family friendly hours". She has said she works from sun up to sun down doing her ebay stuff.

I think the person in the article is confusing revenue sales with her profits. Her sales could be well over 100,000pounds/year but her profits are much less. Something doesn't smell right with this article or it could be my stinky arm pits.

But I'm still happy that her sales are increasing so I will now shut my mouth up.

Re: Ebay seller makes 100k a year - makes national news

Not correct Yotano, I rotate 20 accounts per week and sold on over 300 different accounts last year.

She worked all year and made 100k? Good for her because she was on a dead end job making 28k. I have made 100k in a month before working a few hours a day a few days a week. She said she works family friendly hours because she has kids to take care of etc which you do not have so you would not understand the difference. What she did can be done easily with some organization skills.

You make it out like anyone who is making crazy money has to work 24-7 and that is totally not correct. Working smart and being successful while making money can be done and you do not have to work 24-7 to accomplish that.

I dont work straight sun up to sun down without doing other things. I am online for an hour in the morning, take my kids to school, fix hubby breakfast and I head to the warehouse for a bit to get my girl ready to sort and clean items for next weeks sales, take pictures, measure etc.
I have perfected a way to pack items quickly and therefore we can pack and label 100s of items in a few hours tops.

Come home fix myself something to eat, check ebay questions, get on this forum, make some accounts. Go on ebay and online auctions to see if I can grab anything to re sell, check out next weeks antique auctions etc.

Leave early to hit the Goodwill and over to pick up my kids from school.

Come home fix them a snack, get back online for an hour or so here and again checking questions on ebay accounts, etsy or amazon if I have anything listed. Make some more accounts. Supper time comes I am offline and doing other things like laundry etc. When they are getting ready for bed I do most of my work after everyone is fast asleep. I sang tons of items on ebay ending today to re sell, I find antique auctions to go to or call in bids and check ebay questions etc.

Warm months we hit our pool for a few hours and when everyone is in bed for the night I am back on the computer checking, making accounts, buying items and chatting here etc.

I never work straight hours like this lady. I do and stop doing anything related to ebay etc many times a day and do my Mom duties etc.

We are at Disney at least once a week and many times twice a week.

I dont work ebay only on Sunday and Monday. I list items Sunday to Sunday and only go onto ebay for questions etc or if I sell a BIN which is rare. So no, I am not working sun up to sun down on ebay.

What I do is have the freedom to come and go, work when I want and when I dont want and still make great money doing it this way.

What are you confusing is when I say I am not a couch potato and I am busy all day and all night long. If kids are in sports I am not online a lot, if it is softball season I am at the park, gymnastics I am at the gym.

Summer time we are at the beach most days.

I dont waste a minute of time. If I have a free minute I am looking for something to buy, making accounts or doing other things.

I never said I am on ebay sun up to sun down ever.

In fact listing Sunday to Sunday I usually am only on ebay on Sunday and Monday other then to answer questions during the week.

I spent a total of 2 hours tops on ebay printing labels today for those who paid last night and this morning. Will spend less then an hour at the warehouse in the morning packing and done with ebay for the week until Sunday.

Being your own boss, making your own hours, not having a schedule, doing what you enjoy and getting the option of being able to come and go when you want and go where you want because of the money is fantastic.

She worked a full time job and made 28k. What you call work I call enjoyment, I dont work sun up to sun down "working".

Dont confuse forced "work" and enjoyment of being able to be your own boss, make crazy money and get to do what your truly enjoy at any time you want during the day. I know I am lucky because not many get to do that.

Family friendly hours is what Yotano? I only work when my kids are in school, doing homework or in bed at night. When they get home from school I am checking ebay, this forum etc from my latop and do not "work" as you call it.

I can say I made far more then this lady and worked ebay, etsy and Amazon only 2-3 days per week tops.

Family friendly is being able to stop what you are doing, go to the gym, softball field, Disney, the beach, take a cruise, go to the Bahamas when you want and having the funds to get to do those things because you organized your time to be able to be free to do what you want and when you want.

Again, dont confuse "work" with doing and getting paid to do the things you enjoy in life.

And I dont spend sun up to sun down on ebay either.

Hard work, or for me "enjoyment" of the treasure hunt pays off. I just paid cash for a brand new suburban, have a 5/3 caged pool home free and clear, a warehouse full of antiques free and clear, storage sheds full of items for craigslist, a rental property with two units free and clear. Take 1-2 cruises or go to the Bahamas every year etc. Not many get to do this so I feel extremely lucky.

Where I am at today is because I am willing to "enjoy" my hobby so much and will put in any time I need to be able to do the above. I dont give anyone else credit for my success because I did it on my own because I was willing and organized enough to built it from 1995 till today into what it is without any help from anyone.

Just trying to get your facts corrected here.

Re: Ebay seller makes 100k a year - makes national news

I stand corrected, you Sandy are my idol.

I do have a son but he lives with his mom in CA. But I am very happy that she is doing all of that. I myself have worked a very high stressful job for years until I made enough to quit and to work ebay full time. I can also enjoy my time off, like yourself, and enjoy living debt free and paying things with cash. Just bought my 1st rental unit(s) and still fixing it up with my tastes to rent them out.

I didn't mean to offend you or anyone with my words. Most likely assume a lot of things which I always do.

Think someone is getting confused between what she 'makes' and turns over

I saw that straight away in the article.

Surprised others on here did not flag it up.

Turnover is for Vanity, Profit is for sanity.

Read and Repeat!

That is what I was getting at in post #4

She may well have a turn over of £100,000 a year, but her profit is only 25% of that 100k.

That means she is now £3,000 a year worse off. Add to that the fact that the husbands left his job to help and they are now a lot less financially secure.

Now her turn over and profit may well have sky rocketed in the years since, but the fact that the article does not mention number for the following years suggests to me that that simply did not happen.

^^^

Might be worse off as far as actual amount made. But we did not consider the benefits of not having to answer to a manager or boss, or having to pretend that we actually care about who we are working under at the time.

There are many Ebay sellers whose sales 6-7 figures, but their gross and net profit is nothing to write home about.

agent006140 10-30-2019 09:27 AM

Re: Ebay seller makes 100k a year - makes national news

$153k,is that net profit before tax?
thats good, very good for etailers WORKING FROM home.
There is an Ebay seller who sells returns, refurbished, flawed, used cameras and accessories,he started out solo, then his wife joined him and he hire 4 assistants, his annual sales is over 1 million dollars, but between his Paypal and Ebay fees and other expenses,he was eating plenty of negs and returns so he is not a top rated seller with 10% discount on FVF,he ended up losing money.
his wife found a job outside home, his assistants were layoff and he ended up all by himself again.
His problem is in his merchandise, buyers are not pleased with foggy, chipped, smudged lens and broken parts.
There is also a couple in CA who sells DVD,VHS and CDs auction style ,of course we know what happens when NFLX arrives.
They have a warehouse full of dvd and cds
