Add your National Insurance number!!

One year old stealth account and the payment was hold last night with an email from ebay.

Add your National Insurance number!

We’re getting in touch to let you know that you need to update your account information with your National Insurance number. New UK digital sales reporting legislation requires sellers with 30 or more sales in a calendar year, to register this information.

This is end of the road?

Hello, it is not the end, it is just that we must learn to walk again, the problem is that nations and states now want to take our money in any way, be it legitimate accounts or
stealthy in the end is a problem

Was going to ask this myself. It's a thing that the EU have brought in for tax purposes, which the UK are following as well.
If you sell more than 30 items or €2000 in a year, you have to pass on your details to eBay (and other online marketplaces) so they can pass them onto the relevant tax companies (HMRC in the UK).
Over £1000 turnover* per year and you have to pay tax on your online sales.

This is really going to hurt Stealth in a big way because you can't change your National Insurance number, unlike changing your name, or address, etc.

Other people will be able to provide more detailed info, but this is the general gist!

*This applies to people buying to sell and making a profit. For personal sales this doesn't apply, but there is something called Capital Gains Tax which you also have to pay over a certain threshold.
Most people didn't need to know this much about taxes...until now!

Re: Add your National Insurance number!!

They want everyone to turn into business sellers eventually I think so HMRC can track them

Re: Add your National Insurance number!!

This is how they stop people from selling that do so without declaring to HMRC

And it also boosts the income of legitimately registered businesses

One year old so it was created last year ?

I thought they were only asking accounts created this year.

Re: Add your National Insurance number!!

No different than US government asking for our Social Security number so it can send us a 1099 form showing how much we have sold and expect us to report it in our income tax return.
But on Ebay, some sellers sell things around the house and govt does not expect those sales to be profitable as it figures we bought them brand new at a higher price.
But then there are some sellers running a business from home and their annual sales run into 6-7 figures .

I've thankfully still not been asked by eBay to add my NI number, and to be honest given it is something that can never be changed (and the fact, can eBay really be trusted with such information?!) I really don't want to give them that detail.

Other UK selling platforms still haven't asked either for NINO.

I wonder if eBay will just accept any number that fits the layout type for a NINO or whether it really has to be yours... HMRC (as this is what it is about) will have your details anyway, so eBay doesn't need them.

In US,Ebay asks for our social security number so it can send us a tax form ,stating how much is our gross sales, one copy comes to us and another goes to Internal Revenue Service.
Is that the same with UK NI?

I'm willing to sacrifice one of my stealths to test it out. Going to submit anything in the correct format and see whether HMRC gets back to ebay saying it's the wrong info.

It could also be a "typo" at my end can't it ...

Like yourself I don't trust these platforms with such sensitive data. Too many breaches.

It won't even be submitted to HMRC until next year or 2026 if the account was created before this year.

Did you have any luck with this experiment? Did it work or did they reject it?
Also does anyone know if there’s any new stealth methods for 2025? (Stealth methods which can overcome the NI number situation)

Re: Add your National Insurance number!!

As mentioned here, Ebay will pass whatever number you give over to HMRC as long as its in the correct format - ebay don't care about this its something HMRC have forced on them
Whether Ebay start using this information to link accounts I don't know but given that they will pas over your personal info as well it all needs to match up
