Tariff on everything.

A friend of mine had his wife send him some personal belongings of him in a smaller than shoe box size ..... worth practically nothing and now UPS just billed him a tariff of $100

the package was UPS express safer from Hong Kong to USA.

this is messed up.

He was so pissed off, he paid it, but he said he's gonna do a chargeback to take the money back......

What reason is he going to use for the chargeback?
UPS does not get to keep the $100,it is turned over to US govt

Backing flump has consequences sadly. The little spoiled orange man has no clue, sinking the US economy must be the goal, because that's the end result.

Re: Tariff on everything.

US government wants local manufacturing, instead of buying from overseas foes and friends.
Friends today could be enemy to morrow, is US govt part owner of US Steel now?How about Intel?

Re: Tariff on everything.

Why would the friend of your friend declare small personal belongings as commercial merchandise?

Maybe they should have used bitcoin and send the items through the blockchain. I hear USDT is very good for transporting physical goods internationally

He can call UPS,there may be a form where he could say this is personal and see if UPS can get his money back.

Re: Tariff on everything.

Good luck with that, about as big a chance as the government giving you back taxes they stole from you...

Re: Tariff on everything.

https://www.ups.com/us/en/shipping/i...ng/import-fees
If his wife is in HK which is part of China she must have heard of tariff imposed on Chinese goods, the local UPS person which accepted her shipment could have advised her how to fill out the form .
What is the item,is it used or new?
Is it really made in China or HK?
A chargeback would not work,it would be against UPS and it has proof the shipment was delivered.

Re: Tariff on everything.

It is true that the local UPS person might have flubbed the declaration - chargeback is going to depend on his CC company...

Re: Tariff on everything.

Usually the sender filled out the form,UPS does not dictate what she should enter ,may be he will review it to make sure it is all filled out correctly.
I used to import handpainted procelain figurines from Europe, antiques and handmade items are duty free, but some vendors entered the wrong code and I end up paying customs duty,so I will fill out a form and attached vendor invoice and pictures of some figurines and get my money back, what I did not get back is the USPS $10 fee for its role.
S your friend should do the same,UPS would tell him what form to use,$100 is a lot of money !

Re: Tariff on everything.

do not send with UPS , they are always very strict on customs so that people always get charged to the maximum and in general do not use any express delivery just usual airmail with local postal service

$100 is not that bad , many people got their packets destroyed by UPS in the last couple of months as they could not go through customs and started piling up

what do you mean 'cannot go through customs?
If the recipient does not want to pay tariff ,then UPS will either return it to the sender or have them destroyed?

Re: Tariff on everything.

It could be there is no difference between personal or business shipment, any shipment from China will do.
What is the item and did she declare a value?

Once I sold a figurine made of Bovine Bone (really, cowbone crushed and mixed with resin to form a figurine),EBay said I should use the word Bovine and avoid word like ivory or ivory colored .
It went to a German buyer,German customs want to know what is wrong with the cow,?what is the name of the airline and flight number?where is the vet report? What and who else is on the plane with this sick cow?
My buyer is so scared she never pick up the item.
