Just got a phone call from paypal, is my ebay acc in danger?

This morning, I logged in to paypal to replace my old phone number with a new one. And then a friend contacted me asking if I can lend him some money, so I sent $50 to him via paypal as gift.
A few hours later I got a phone call from paypal, they asked some question to verify my new phone number and identity. I answered and they say everything's fine. But then they asked what kind of item I'm selling on ebay, do I sell products or services... I acted dumb and just said that I got some items from a close out sales for cheap. They also ask if I'm selling software (which exactly what I'm doing), I of course said no. Finally they said it's ok and there would be no more question.
So what I want to know is, does my ebay account in danger of being suspended? What should I do now? My ebay and paypal acc are fully verified, 3 years old and have 500+ positive feedbacks

Actually paypal have done what they say they do.... protect their users.

You flagged your account with the change of phone number & then doing a transfer.

Think about what I just wrote...

If they just asked some questions to confirm my identity, it would be fine. But why did they ask about my selling activities on ebay? They made it sound like selling software is a bad thing to do.
I managed to stay under radar for years and I'm afraid that this phone call may turn they attention toward my account

It sucks, but selling software is one of the most risky things you can sell in eBay's eyes

this may rank against the silliest thing i ever saw

of course they dont know what your selling before they ask do they :boink:

in my humble opinion youve signed your own death warrant

a: with the gift payment

b: b with the change of number

c : with the lie and lack of a correct answer to give them

but most of all with the combination of a+b+c

tyrael 03-07-2013 11:05 AM

I think a+b is fine, I sent payment as gift all the time, and never had any problem. And when I change number, it's perfectly normal for paypal to call me to confirm my identity.
About the lie, if I answered yes, then they would ask a tons more questions, I might not be able to answer them and this would lead to bigger problem.
I don't think they know what I'm selling when they asked because if they did, they would have removed my listing by now.

they_screwed_me_too 03-07-2013 11:07 AM

so they just guessed you were selling software ?

the info is on the screen as they call you

tyrael 03-07-2013 12:00 PM

You might be right. So what should I do now? Should I end all my listing and lay low for a while?
And if they decide to take action, will they suspend my account right away? My ebay account can takes 3 VeRO strikes before going down, so I hope they just put a strike on it and drop the matter.

Time for more accounts and spread your sales out!

Changing your phone number is fine.

Sending a payment as gift will always get you limited.

Selling software is always a huge risk.

Do you really think they don't see what you're selling? They see the names of the items you're selling. They just wanted to see if you're lying to them or not. Let the account cool for a few weeks or months and change the things you're selling to something non-risk, otherwise the account might just as well be toast very soon.

I agree sending gifts to other people is just stupid. The $50 loan somebody needs is never worth the risk of losing a PayPal account. Some people might get away with it, but I would call anyone who does an idiot, especially if it is a stealth account.
