eBay's new way to thwart attempts to re-register?
 

I'm sure others here have gotten an alert from eBay about a new "enhanced security" measure that will be implemented soon.

They said that if any user attempts to sell using a computer not directly associated with that account, eBay will place a telephone call to that user's registered number to verify the identity of the seller. Since when is anybody worried about someone getting into their account and using it to sell?

IMO this has nothing to do with security and everything to do with preventing suspended users from using new accounts.

Was on vacation and in another state, loaded auctions from computer at hotel, no phone call.......and this is a new acct....

They said it's a new feature that's coming soon. It hasn't been implemented yet.

Yeah, like how new accounts if they try to bid too much ebay says it limits them "FOR YOUR PROTECTION."

It would be nice if eBay stopped lying.

RichO, I'm pretty sure it's to stop the reselling of accounts. However, this method is still slightly flawed.

All the user needs to do is change the security questions on the account. Then - after I think 10 days, they are able to add a new phone number, as long as they answers 2 security questions. This number CAN be a cell phone.

Ebay will then ring this phone number, and you can continue to sell.

So basically, this "security" measure is just as secure as simply asking to enter the security question on the account.

I really wouldn't worry about it.
