They can and they will send it to a collection agency who will hound you with letters and phone calls until you tell them, in writing, to stop. Then, you have to send them a letter, within 30 days of receiving their first letter to you, requesting that they give you proof that you owe this account and that this account even belonged to you. If they do not respond to your request within 30 days then they cannot continue to bother you with any communications. When you send the first letter, also send a separate letter requesting that they no longer contact you via phone. By law, they must stop calling you on the phone once you have asked them, in writing, to do so.
I know it sucks to even think of giving them one penny, but it just isn't worth it. Think about it this way, it is probably going to cost them more money to collect what they say you owe than what you actually owe....
