Why would you even create a paypal account other than to link it to your ebay ?, and withdraw the funds you have made through your sales.

Many people use other gateways to sell. Ebay isnt the only place we use it.

But ebay has the traffic that other sites do not have and therefore brings in the sales as well

Instead of asking if it is essential you should ask why not do so?
I cant think of any reason not to do so since the ebay and paypal accounts share info anyway and are therefore linked as it is. Linking them officially makes it that much easier to operate on both so I don't see any reason not to do so.
