Address Abbreviations
 

Hi, guys. If you have an address like 1200 W 8th St, would eBay prefer no abbreviations like 1200 West 8th Street, or should either one work?

I don't know what eBay PREFERS, but it should not matter. Most businesses use address standardization software to make sure that all of the addresses in their database conform to what the US Postal Service PREFERS. There is an entire technical article about that, but basically it just takes things like West and Street and abbreviates them unless the actual NAME of the street is "West" rather than a directional.

Either one should work.

You could not, however, appear to be at 2 different addresses by making one "1200 W 8th St" and the other "1200 West 8th Street" - they will see these as the same address.

I want to say that they use a system, similar to 'Melissa Data', which is an address verification system, in order to determine same addresses that are abbreviated or all together incorrect. Incorrect, meaning, if you say you live at 123 Main Street and you use 123 Main Lane, the system will know.

Melissa Data has address validation and standardization software and they use data supplied by the USPS. Other companies have this as well. Nearly ALL business use it to standardize their addresses. You have to do that if you want any type of postal discounts and it helps in other aspects of account management such as account matching, data analysis, etc.
