VMware Windows XP Wireless Network Question

I used a official Windows XP disc to install XP on a VM. I have a D-Link wireless network adapter (DWA-171) that states it works with XP. I got the adapter to find the networks but because my version of XP doesn't have the WPA2 update it will only let me enter passwords for WPA.

My question is:
what am I missing that wont let me connect to WPA after I enter the password? It just tries to connect but doesn't make the connection.

When you installed the D-Link, did u install the drivers only or D-Links utilities as well?

Also, which Service Pack does your Windows XP have?

Re: VMware Windows XP Wireless Network Question

when I installed d-link drivers the option was not available to install network manager so the only option was to install the drivers. network manager's been available on all the windows 7 installs I've done... although I've never installed it. (I'm guessing that's what you meant by utilities)

The copy of XP I have only has service pack 2.

I have to do some researching on using NAT because I couldn't get it to connect through the Ethernet connection either.

I thought it was just XP but when I set up one of my copies of Windows 7 to connect through the Ethernet cable with NAT I couldn't get it to work either even though the host was connected to Ethernet and working.

Maybe I read wrong but I read XP may still update to SP3 so I was trying to connect through Ethernet.

XP just has doesn't have many options. I never realize how basic it was. Then again, I haven't used it in a decade.

Try using Bridged Connection.

I'm using Windows XP with TP-LINK TL-WN725N Nano Wireless N150 Adapter....works perfect.

I got finely the Ethernet connection to work. The problem was my VMnet0 wasn't set up right so bridging wasn't working. I went into virtual network editor and set it up to use the Ethernet adapter.

What browser do you use for XP? Where do you find browsers for XP?

Wondering if I need SP3. And where to find it.

Google doesn't seem to produce much relevant info on XP these days.

Firefox, any browser will work fine.

I mostly use Portable Firefox.

SOLVED:

I found this site that has all the MS updates and downloaded XP SP3.

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com

(you have to enter what your looking for in the search bar)

The Service Pack 3 update fixed the issue of the authentication box to enter password for WPA2 networks not popping up. But it still acted like the password was wrong or couldn't communicate with the router to give it the password

Then I downloaded the XP Hotfix update from the same place and it fixed the issue.

Good to hear...I think.

Re: VMware Windows XP Wireless Network Question

Am I doing this all wrong installing network drivers on the guest?

I've had my USB network adapter disabled on my host so I never realized I could select it as a bridged connection for VMnet0 or a custom network like VMnet1. Ive been installing the USB drivers on the guest and connecting through the USB controller.

Which way do you connect, which is safer, or is there just more than one way to skin a cat in this situation?

And another question...
Is custom the same principle as a bridged replicated physical network connection? only you can select which VMnet adapter you want to use if you already have VMnet0 assigned to another adapter?
