Changing IP address without damaging router

Now it is necessary to change your ip address when using ebay if for example your ebay account is suspended and you start using a new one.

To go to all the effort of creating a new stealth ebay account and using the same IP address is not a good idea.

The quickest way to change an ip address is to switch off the router for 10 seconds, and to check the ip has changed you can have an open window in firefox link to a "change my ip website". Once the switch off / switch on is complete you will be able to refresh the page and you should have a nice new ip address.

However if you switch off your modem often (which I do) it seems that you can shorten the life of your modem.

To date I have knackered 2 Belkin modems doing this. Now it could of been that they had a fault anyway but I am inclined to think that removing the electrical current and then replacing it causes a power surge that routers do not like.

What happens is after a time the router will refuse to connect to the internet and / or some lights will no longer work.

Another way to change the IP very easily is go to the router settings page. Now this will be for UK users and settings in other countries may vary slightly.

How to change ip quickly without physically switching off router

1) open firefox.

2) type in 192.168.2.1

3) select any of the options of the left

4) Do a submit to make changes, ((but do not change any of the settings at all)

5) There will be a countdown timer, usually from 25 seconds, then the router will restart

6) Refresh an open "change my IP page" and check IP address has been changed

Now this works and is better for the health of the modem. Unlike when you switch the router off at the wall, power is still to the unit, all it does with this method is make a quick restart.

This is a little bit more work than simply turning the router off at the wall, but will not damage your router with power surges.

Take it from me, I have knackered 2 routers now by switching them off at the wall!

When i change ips i never had to turn off the router! just the modem needed to be powered down then restarted. I use a power strip with a on and off switch to reset the modem. I use linksys routers though

lol, i still switch off at the wall, its just the quick way to do it. especially if I am feeling creative and wanting to make a few new accounts, clearing cookies between each registration and a new ip address is essential.

I now have a back up router and can return my current one if it fails before the 12 month period expires.

I have some stupid ISP with an dish on my roof. There is no modem, just a direct line to the dish so the only thing I can do is unplug the power cord to the adapter, but while my IP is dynamic the lease time is about a week I think...I can't change it by renewing it or anything.

I used to have a motorola surf board cable modem that I used to switch off every night to save bandwith. Lasted me 10 years before it literally blew! :bounce:

Now I have a netgear modem/router. Turning it off will not chnage my ip. Annoying.

This is why I like the DD-WRT firmware. You can actually send a remote reboot command to both your router and modem if you know the command.

Mu IP provider just told me that with DSL if you press the reset button on the back it will produce a new IP address every time and explained that cable modems do not work this way, I will be getting this installed next week, I hope it works
