Ebay tracking via hard drive fingerprint....

I know that on this site it's said that Ebay does NOT track via your Windows serial number or the hard drive "finger print" and that a seperate user account on a computer is as good as a seperate computer. But can anyone point me to where this is expanded on (I looked, and couldn't find a thread) so that I can understand how they DONT track via Windows serial or Harddrive/modem info? After being spooked about that for years, understanding it better would help me to relax. And I did look for where it might be mentioned, but can't find a section where the specifics are explained a bit better. Thanks in advance! :pop2:

Well for me i do not trust separate user accounts on a single computer. I don't know why i just prefer to use Vmware( emulate any operating systems inside your computer ) this way i know that everything is seperate and if they are tracking some sort of serial numbers each OS will have their unique one so nothing will get linked.

This dose not answer your questions but i just thought i'd throw it out their lol

Yes, thanks...me too. It makes me worry a little bit as well. If someone could explain the science behind it so I could understand more about how it's safe I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Here's a site you can check out, this is what most websites can see when you visit them, if you have alot of suspended accounts on the same computer it could be pretty easy to match them up with this info regardless if you have different ip and address. Not sure if that's what ebay does or not anything is possible.

Your Computer's Identity

Thanks, but I dont see anything besides the IP address that the site tracks... it does say "Your computer's identity" but I dont see anything besides the IP/DNS tracked. Is there something else tracked?

It shows your browser settings, screen resolution and plugins, click on the test again button and all your plugins will showup.

Ebay is much easier than amazon but the big problem begins when one of you account is closed down then you have to worry about it. Different windows user account wont do it. Just play safe and dont listen to much to others and get your own conclusion

Still waiting on Vic's thoughts about this. I'm sure Aspkin would've updated us already if this was the case. Unless the case is unknown at the moment.

Ebay doesn't use this info for active accounts, they might use it to link suspended accounts though. Only reason I say that is because I had about a dozen accounts whiped out and the last 3 I tried to set up got limited.

I believe you're right! So what do you suggest doing after any suspended accounts?

GreenBean 05-31-2010 07:25 PM

What I suggest is closing the thread until the TinHat General arrives....
that way all the theories can be contained and not get out of hand.:spy:
I'll reopen it after it gets analysed
Thread closed

Installing a new operating system and using a different browser might work. Actually I had more like 25 accounts go down about the same time only 5 were sellers, the other 20 were used to purchase my own stuff every one of them is naru'd even though I still have other accounts still running on the same computer but they also have over 100 feedback and high dsr's so not sure if it's true or not but doesn't hurt to be extra safe.
