| | | madman | 07-14-2010 03:56 PM | gmail security regarding ebay linking hi,
I read an old post regarding how reading your email could expose your id as an old suspended account owner.
The info was great, but the post was so old so I figure out I should start a new thread here.
That email engineer said that if you open an email from ebay using an email client(web or thick), even if you don't click anything in the email, ebay will know
where the email is received.
Is this really ture? It does make sense to me though.
I have an attempt solution here.
I use gmail, if I setup a filter and delete all the emails from Ebay as soon as they arrive. Does gmail even bother to try to deliver it? assumed gmail server will take care of as soon as it send to the post office:bounce:
Please advice. any participation is appreciated.

Sad, Sad, Sad. |
| parsis | 07-14-2010 06:17 PM | Hi,
I thought they could only track through flash cookies that were activated when the e-mail was opened in an other than basic HTML form..
Thats what I've been working on anyway.

Sad, Sad, Sad. | Why? Did you want me to get out of my bed to answer you? Your post was there for 2 hours only. Users do other things and the majority of posts get replies. If there was a real desperate need for answers, then a pm to admin works as well. (I'd have still been asleep but you get my drift?:))
Now I've to go find the thread you're quoting so you can get the answer you want.:boink: I'll be back (& in less than 2 hours;)) |
| GreenBean | 07-14-2010 08:12 PM | I'm back!:yar: http://www.aspkin.com/forums/ebay-tr...-tracking.html
I think this is the thread? If it's not, read it to see if it helps with your conundrum.:pop2:
Also the actual question is based on 'tracking'. It may be better moved after you've had a chance to read it. |
| madman | 07-14-2010 09:38 PM | greenbean,
Thanks for your response.
I didn't try to drag you out of bed to reply though.
But it seems you really are having a comfortable life somewhere by sleeping till noon while I spent whole night reading posts here. LOL
I'm new here and didn't know your response window.
My first job in IT required me a 10 minutes response window:juggle: so I kind of expect that here. LOL
thanks for the tip of writing to admin to get attention though.
Please have a rest on this :behindsofa: Quote:

| GreenBean | 07-14-2010 09:43 PM | LOL! I like you already, madman :yar: My real life work requires instant responses as well. Still, a little fun does no harm.:yar: |
| madman | 07-14-2010 09:47 PM | Hi Greenbean,
thanks for that worried about emailxxx link:-)
But I have to make it clear what I was talking about most like the email routing path.
not the tracking bug they planted in our system.
think of mail delivery, you go online and track a package, you can see where it was posted and what is the routing path and where it was delivered right?
similar thing for email. but I feel it is a long short to get a clue and link somebody by this. I know company can track a email receipt right or read or unread as status right?
my little town is very small and I don't know how many people here actually have ebay seller account.......thought to check with people and see if there is any potential risk of keep ebay message coming in.
thanks again. nice to meet you here. thanks for welcoming me by getting out of bed. LOL |
| GreenBean | 07-14-2010 10:00 PM | This gets better, in that you are thinking outside the box. The way I read your question is you are worrying about a message sent from ebay via computer linking you to other ebay info? Using the analogy, a letter sent to an address can go to the dead letter office if that address is inaccurate but that letter might be traced somehow to the addressee, yes? |
| aspkin | 07-14-2010 10:36 PM | Madman the path an email takes to reach your inbox is not something eBay knows about. It goes to whatever email provider you are using and stashed there until you read it. If you decide to download the email to your computer it will come directly from your email provider.
The only thing to worry about are links and a tracking images used within emails. That's why I recommend disabling images when reading emails. This tracking image can grab a lot of information about your computer if allowed to operate.
Just have images disabled by default and you'll be fine. I doubt these tracking images are used to link accounts at this point, but it's better to be safe then sorry if one day they flip a switch and get smart. |
| madman | 07-15-2010 12:57 AM | Thanks for both Greenbean and aspkin!
I am very carefully prepared right now before I launch this time.
Glad found this forum.
Thanks for the support from the group.
I'm a little lost in the navigation system though. but that could be due to newbie status and I'm sure I will get around better later on.
many thanks. |
Surely you dont have to worry about email tracking if you are vigourously sticking to the separate user account principles?
I used to delete all cookies all the time including the flash ones but if you do that now you have to keep verifying your ebay account with a 4 digit telephone code. This is a pain in the back side.
I dont bother to delete any cookies now using separate user accounts. Just leave them there. Oh and if you worry about logging in to the wrong ebay ID in the wrong User account then simply intall Roboform and never manually log in again. |
| oompaloompa | 08-01-2010 03:25 PM | if you have images displayed, can grab the IP, not just cookies...? |
| waterproof | 08-01-2010 04:29 PM | Nice thread! Funny too!
That is one thing I forgot to do...disable my images by default. Thanks for the question and the answer...Gotta go! :bolt: Quote:

| waterproof | 08-01-2010 04:33 PM | DO what SAW mentions above. That is what I do to. Just make sure to use that particular Ebay/PP account in a seperate User Account and you should be fine.
I only use my Ebay/PP account in that "designated" User Account...and thats it.
Good Luck

| jbluntz | 08-06-2010 07:55 PM | I check all my ebay account messages with yahoo and never disabled images, the main thing to be careful of is replying to the message while logged in to another ebay account, I did that once and that didn't even link me replied to a buyer through yahoo from a different user and ebay id, he replied back to that user and I told him I didn't know what he was talking about, that account never got linked either. |
| MadSam | 08-08-2010 10:10 PM | Quick thinking jbuntz. |
| DogFacedBoy | 08-13-2010 11:10 PM | Different Windows user account for each ebay account. I have not had an account go down since I started so I can not comment on linking...hasn't linked for when I had to enter a bid just to get the ball rolling though |
