Question about a second computer on Cable Internet

I have cable internet (Comcast, if it matters) and have a long standing, good, active Ebay account.

How can I add a second computer to the comcast line and give it a seperate IP address, WHILE KEEPING THE ORIGINAL COMPUTER AND IP so I can use both?

Is that possible? I'm happy to buy anything, to keep things hooked up with actual cable instead of wireless, whatever.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I'm not sure if this is possible, but if it is, I would be interested as well.

If your cable modem has a usb connection as well that should give a second ip. Make a new user account in windows and only use the usb connection with that user. Making sure the network cable is unhooked. Always test and log ips first before logging into eBay with ip chicken or similar

If I'm not mistaken, Comcast actually gives you 1 IP no matter how many PCs you have.
This is per my experience when I had Comcast.

Pod: Per your experience, yours doesn't because it's a hardware thing you have in Canada?

Do you not know how to change your IP? If not that's where you need to start. I'm not familiar with Comcast, but you should be able to call them up and ask for another modem. Each modem should assign a different IP for each machine. I suggest you head over to this section of the forum http://www.aspkin.com/forums/ebay-tracking/ and pay close attention to the sticky threads for more insight on changing your IP.

pod is mostly correct in post #3.

However, it does depend on the local office of the ISP (Comcast, in this case).

I can get an IP from the ethernet of the router and a different IP from the USB port. I can connect to each port at the same time (from 2 different computers). I have Comcast.

However, Comcast does not support this in every market. Some areas yes, and some areas no. In some cities, only one port of the modem can be active at any given time. Thus, if the ethernet gets an IP address first, the USB port is automatically disabled. If the USB gets an IP address first, the ethernet is automatically disabled. A modem reboot would be required when switching ports is desired.

So, test your modem and find out. It may work and it may not. Modem hardware can handle it, but the ISP programs what features are enabled or disabled. The features vary from city to city (even if the provider is the same).

I never even thought to try this! That would actually be great. Two puters running at the same time is very appealing... I will have to give it a try.
