Tracking through opening emails!!

Hi,

I understand that emails opened with Gmail never contain tracking items.

However, I am wondering if you open your gmail emails within an email client such as Apple mac mail will the same rules apply.

I.e. is is still safe to open emails from banned accounts within an email client rather than the gmail website?
