IP questions part 5640...

I have my broadband through my tv set top box.

for love nor money this will not let me reset my ip address. I have been on the phone to india about 20 times trying to help reset the darn thing with no success whatsoever. the only time it ever changed was when I went on holiday for 2 weeks in january and left the set top box off for the duration.

anyway, can somebody help me on this one. if I buy a modem and connect through that, rather than the set top box, will this give me a new IP address? I'm using a PC.

Go to command prompt. In xp click start, then run then type in the box cmd. That should bring up the black window. Then type Ipconfig /all , that should tell you your ip and when it expires. It should give the time and date that the ip address will expire, on the day that it expires just make sure to have your cpu and broadband shut off for about 24 hours. Then it should renew a new ip address lease. Thats what I do now with my cable modem. Hope that works..

You can also try a ipconfig /release, then wait 24 hours then type ipconfig /renew

thanks mate, have done all that before and it still didn't work. it renewed itself much to my annoyance

jamesy 05-02-2007 11:11 AM

the other thing is that I switch between broadband and dial up several times a day. whenever I reconnect to broadband it renews the lease for 7 days. this is why I'd like to get a modem for my broadband if that will work. can anybody confirm or deny this for me?

CPUGEEK 05-02-2007 11:46 AM

i just read up on broadbands and if you set it so that you have to sign in for every session they will give you a new ip..

jamesy 05-02-2007 12:02 PM

thanks mate. still no joy!

with XP I'm doing the following:

network connection >> high speed internet >> change settings of this connection >> local area connection properties >> internet protocol (TCP/IP) >> properties

i then get the choice to connect automatically, or set it manually.

any suggestions how I set it to change each time I connect?

If you have a broadband connection. the only way to change the IP address is to change the MAC address for your network interface card. Which means if you buy a new NIC then you will get a new IP address for your cable modem. Or you can but a cheap router, the router will have a new MAC address which will in return change your ip address. Some routers will also allow you to change the MAC address of the router manually, which will allow you to change your IP address whenever you want. I use a Belkin router, and it works great.

jamesy 05-03-2007 10:07 AM

which belkin do you use?

do you know which models let you change the MAC address?

EbayHater 05-03-2007 10:16 AM

I have 2 diffrent routers I just bought a belkin Wireless G router for $40.00 from compusa.com. And this allows me to do it.

EbayHater 05-03-2007 10:18 AM

It comes with an advanced user interface that allows you change all of the settings via a web address that they provide.

Thats not true. I have a cable modem with NO routers and I change my IP Address all the time..I don't know why it isn't working for some people but it works for me.

EbayHater 05-03-2007 10:21 AM

Also the whole renew your IP address by releasing it through CMD. doesnt work with my cable modem. You have to change your mac address.

CPUGEEK 05-03-2007 10:22 AM

Iheard another way to change your mac address which I use to do waaay back in the day to get a new ip is use this software..You can spoof your mac address which will allow you to get a new ip...

Hide-My-IP.Com - Hide My MAC Address

EbayHater 05-03-2007 10:22 AM

I guess it depends on your Cable company.

EbayHater 05-03-2007 10:23 AM

The problem with IP spoofing is sometimes you get an IP address in another country.

EbayHater 05-03-2007 10:24 AM

The guide says make sure your IP adress is in your town.

IP Help

I am having trouble changing my ip address. I have dsl and have unplugged everything on my dsl connection including the power for over 1 hour and the ip is still the same. How do I change it? Also, can anyone give me insight on ip blockers. I tried the free ones on this sight but they only work during certain hours. If I buy the software online will that permanently block ebay and paypal from seeing my ip. Would this be a good idea or a red flag to ebay and paypal?

EbayHater 05-17-2007 06:27 PM

Just go out an buy a cheap router. I use a belkin router. I allows me to change my mac address on the router which will give you a new ip address from your isp. Or you can just go out and by a new network card. that will get you the same result. In order to change your ip address you have to change your MAC address.

ebaysucks12345 05-17-2007 07:35 PM

Hey, i was having problems changing my ip also. But i found this program called SMAC and it changes your mac address for you, and then when your mac address changes your ip address changes. it costs like 20 bucks, but its worth it.
