Default AOL question

I searched the forum for AOL information but most of the information is very old (2007 and 2008).

I use a Mac Mini desktop computer with Charter internet. I'm in the process of getting AT&T DSL because Charter is static (although they say they are dynamic).

I had AOL years ago when it was a pay-to-use dial up service. I still have access to my AOL email account although I no longer use AOL for my primary email address.

My question is ~ can I get a dynamic IP address using AOL either by signing in via Firefox or Chrome or signing in through the desktop version of AOL? I have checked IPBurger for both sign in methods but my IP address does not change.

Thanks!

from what i've understood. AOL Desktop should change your ip to a dynamic ip in the area that you pick.

Does the IP address only change when using AOL dial up desktop and not when AOL desktop is accessed through a broadband connection? I cannot get the IP address to change when I use a broadband connection to connect to the AOL desktop.

I would think AOL Dial-up gives you a relatively different IP everytime

I have a Mac Mini desktop computer and currently connect to the internet using an all-in-one modem/router with Charter.com. Charter is supposed to have a dynamic IP address but it is not.

Now for a stupid AOL question ~ do I need separate hardware in order to connect to AOL dial up (desktop)? I am able to connect via my broadband connection but that does not give me a different IP address ~ I get the same IP address as my Charter modem/router. How do I connect via dial up?

Ah - yes for the different IP - if your using a broadband and it's static, you won't get new IP. If you use dial-up - yes different IP.

I've been using the AOL Desktop Version for years since the early 90's, and love it, despite what anyone else says.

You have to use the Desktop version to receive dynamic ip addresses, you usually get around 3-5 ip addresses, afterwards it repeats itself.

I haven't had any problems with it, others have, so it's up to you In the end to decide what to do with it, or If you want to use It or not.

I'm not sure how to "dial up" with my Mac Mini computer. I used AOL dial up back in the good ole days (stone ages) when a telephone cord ran from the wall into the back of the computer. How is this done now since there isn't a telephone jack outlet (?) on my Mac Mini, only an ethernet port? Can I tether my iPhone to my computer and dial in that way? Thanks!

Dial up Is great, but super slow, I'd rather use AOL with broadband Internet than Dial up any day.

If tethering Is an option for you, why not just tether your iphone to create new accounts?

Tethering Is a very good alternative.

Did you purchase the stealth guide?

Prob best to follow what Red_X is saying since broadband is way faster than dial-up.

if you know how to tether it acts the same as a mobile wifi internet... just a tad slower but you will hardly notice.

Thanks everyone for your input/advice. I was able to jailbreak my iPhone 4 (love YouTube!) and I can now tether my iPhone to my Mac Mini ~ yeah! I will use the tethering to set up accounts and then use Auctiva to list and watch my future listings.
