How are they asking to verify you?

There seems to be a huge debate about whether websites can see MAC addresses - have a look here;

how do I find what MAC address web pages see as my MAC address

Thanks interesting..... So websites can't see Mac address but some how AZ can? Are they not considered a website?

I am also confused on the issuem Aspkin seems to believe in Amazon Ghost that they can. I questiona contact of mine on this who is a networking and firewall specialist, and he told me that a website cannot see your MAC address via any normal networking means. Whether or not they could see it using Javascript he didn't know, but he did say if Javascript is enabled your computer sends out enough information to be identifiable.

I agree, if it's possible, they do it. This is part of the very definition of what they do and how they protect it. It's probably factored in to decisions they make, based on risk and so forth, but if it's possible or likely possible, then it's probably done.

Just think back to how at one point you wouldnt think using the same camera would link you- before it's explained to you, who'd expect that there was EXIF info in a picture, or that it would link you, or would even be worth the bother for Eb to track it.

Since 99% of the tracking and flagging is done by software (I'd bet, anyway...) I'm sure more of it (and by more ways than we'd ever imagine) is done than we would believe. Whenever I wonder if something matters, I assume it does. :behindsofa:

It's not a huge debate. It's not even a debate. As you can see from that post, several users have explained in detail that the website (such as eBay or Amazon) can only see the MAC address of the last hop, which is far from being you.

Think of internet traffic as a street, like driving from your house to eBay's headquarters, to pick up a copy of the website (printed out). Just as an example. You get in your car at your house. Your house has a number (the MAC address), each street that you take is a "hop". To get from your house to eBay's headquarters, you need to drive through 20 different streets. Each street can only see the name of the street that connects to it and so can the eBay headquarters. They can only see the name of the street that connects to them. Simply by looking at your car when you get there, eBay doesn't know which streets you've been driving through, much less what your house number is.

If someone comes to visit you at your house, can you see what their home house number is, just by looking at their car? No. You don't know what their house number is unless you've been to their house ..so eBay would need to come into your house and check your computer's MAC address locally, actually sitting at your machine.

However, there will always be people claiming the contrary, just like some people still claim that the world is flat.
