Web Beacons - A threat?

Hi Guys

If I am for instance on some website (newspaper website for example) and there is a little advert of ebay (with ebay logo) in the corner, should this be considered as a web beacon? And can it be a threat?

Re: Web Beacons - A threat?

Technically, by definition, any GIF image that has a hyperlink back to another site is considered a web beacon. But that example you gave should not be considered a threat (advertisements when browsing other sites).

What to be cautious of is if the web beacon was sent directly to you.

For example:

In your GMail account, you receive an email from Paypal of buyer purchasing one of your item. Paypal's logo will be a GIF image taking you back to login to your PP account if you click on it.

That image is most likely unique to you & can cause issues.
