Not at all safe ESPECIALLY when you are using popular companies - read threads about VPN. Why dont you use dongles or cellphone tethering...if you are in the UK...

VPNs are fine to use you just need to know how and which ones to use, using the popular ones especially will cause you problems. But as rsot stated there are other alternatives, so it all just depends on your preference.
