Using a Linux VPS
 

Is it possible to use a Linux VPS for managing ebay accounts, and is it difficult to set up?

I currently use Windows VPS's because I know Windows, but they're much more expensive so I'd like to try a Linux one, but don't know where to start. With Windows you just download google chrome to the vps and go from there.... how much harder is it with CentOS or something like that?

If you want the familiarity of Windows, you could buy a linux VPS and set up a VPN where you connect to it to get a dedicated IP address for your account. That's the cheapest way to go about getting a dedicated IP address. Cost is about $5 monthly for each VPS with VPN set up.

With a VPS, there is no need for a VPN. You are working off of the VPS's IP, so Amazon and eBay never see your computer.

YES, you CAN use a Linux VPS. You should set it up to use GNOME or KDE and install Firefox. GNOME and KDE are both desktop environments. I don't see where one is really any better or worse than the other. They work equally well.

Basically, you install VNC Server, GNOME (or KDE) and Firefox. You then use Putty to boot the server. Once that is all done, you just use VNC to get into your VPS and it looks kind of like a Windows desktop, except in Linux. This is the EASIEST way for someone who does not know a lot about Linux to set up their VPS for stealth use.

The VPS you choose should have 1GB of RAM. You don't need much disk space, but most of them will come with at least 20GB or so.

Setup depends on what Linux distribution you are using. But yes, you CAN do it with just those 4 programs. There are other addons you might eventually want, but those are the basics.

Most VPS services offer you the choice of CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu etc.

Is there any one that's easier or preferable over the others?

Again all I'm looking for is a web browser to access ebay/amazon.

If you don't know what you are doing or lazy to do your research using google or youtube, you should just hire someone to do it for you @ Fiverr.com. It will cost you about $10 for desktop environment setup for your Linux server. That's the easiest way to go.

I would go with CENTOS 5. I cannot say if the other distributions are better or worse, but I have never had a problem with CENTOS. This should be possible to accomplish under ANY Linux distribution, but the instructions for CENTOS 5 are easy to follow.

Empirestate has a point, if you don't have much technical expertise, it might save you some time and frustration to hire someone to install it for you.

I like Ubuntu because if a get an error its really easy to solve just googling since it's a very popular distro.

Remote desktop for VPS look great, but you need more RAM and CPU. Don't like VPN, you need smallest RAM and CPU and save money

this is the most difficult thing i've ever done in my life.

linux comes with no instructions. Its impossible to use.

It's not impossible, I set these up all the time.

Reminds me of the days of Microsoft DOS.

But once installed, it is fairly close to windows. You wouldn't want it as your primary PC, but for a stealth account, it does what it needs to do.

I set up LXDE on Ubuntu, because it's said to be the fastest desktop environment. I've got 1GB RAM.

For the first few weeks everything was pretty quick and snappy, but lately there's been tremendous lag. I did a reboot through the VPS control panel, and the first few webpages I browsed after that loaded fine, but afterward things slowed back to a crawl. It appears to be a RAM issue, but I generally don't even use half my allocated RAM.

One thing it may be is that in the beginning, I wasn't shutting down Ubuntu, and if I hadn't logged in for a week I wouldn't be able to connect to the VPS without logging into root and rebooting and then reloading the desktop environment. So essentially I rebooted several times without properly shutting it down.

But I've stopped doing that, and it's still mighty slow.

After reading this thread I think I am gona stick to VPNs

Another options is to install a WinXP onto a Xen/KVM/VMware VPS yourself. XP consumes almost no resources and will run on the cheapest VPS plan available for these VPS types.

I can not find a VMware download that supports XP. I must not be looking in the right places

No, I mean you can rent a VMware VPS server, and install XP onto it manually.

I don't believe its possible.

I'm convinced that i could'nt get this to work if my life depended on it.If anyone wants to attempt to use a linux vps you might as well save yourself some time and just shoot yourself.

Can you give me some tips on getting my Ubuntu VPS to run like a Windows VPS?

With a Windows VPS, I can login whenever I want, from any computer, without a problem.

With my Ubuntu VPS, I'm only allowed one login. If I close my VNC window, without shutting down the VPS, I have to login to Shell and kill the VPS session and the reload it.

If I shutdown my actual VPS, then I have to login to shell to restart it again.

If I want to switch computers that I access the VPS from, I have to do one of these 2 options. With a Windows VPS I would just close the window and then login from my other computer.

Do you have any tips on a remedy, or is this just how it is with a linux VPS?
