Using non gmail accounts

Hello all,

For years I've used a central email tracking system like a support ticket system to handle all my ebay emails. I'd like to continue using this in the future with a new account but will that get me suspended? I believe it shows the emails in plain text so do the tracking beacons still cause me problems?

Or could I use gmail as an intermediary pop account to "wash" the emails before they get to my ticket system? If I did this would replying from a different email address cause me problems?

Not sure how else to explain this. thanks for looking

Is this email tracking system on your own domain, or is it a service of some sort?

djstonefish 02-20-2009 11:49 AM

its hosted on my own server, but the email domain names for the new account could be different to the old account.

See I know eBay tracks by domain... but do they track by server IP I'm unsure..

It's risky djstonefish.. it would be a lot safer just to use Gmail.. and forward your emails to a central location.

djstonefish 02-22-2009 03:20 PM

ok, so would it be ok to use gmail and then retrieve them from my gmail account by pop? I guess I could change the server ip as well as the domain.

aspkin 02-22-2009 03:22 PM

Yes POP is fine.. many members here go that route.

djstonefish 02-23-2009 06:24 AM

ok, just re read my last post and realised i perhaps didn't make sense...

I'd be looking to use gmail as a basic pop account to forward email into my ticket support system, and then have that system track all emails and email back out to them. I believe i should be able to show the email as having come from googlemail when it goes back to the customer so it should be completely transparent.

You should probably do a test email before you use this system. Check your email headers to make sure it's from Google then, and not your server if you want to reply through your ticket support system.

And yes I understood you; you want to use GMail POP to forward your eBay emails to your ticket support system. That will work fine and you shouldn't have an issue.

This web site is what I use to put in the headers to see where a email comes from.

Plus it is a step by step procedure if you don't know how to do it.

How to find the IP address of the sender in email - Gmail, Yahoo mail or Hotmail : Arul John

Thanks for those updates.

so is it safe to setup all of my gmails to a single Outlook program without linking? i assume replying to the email may not be safe.

djstonefish 02-27-2009 06:08 AM

I was going to ask about this as well... if you reply to the email from gmail or wherever, the ip address will appear in the headers of the email won't it? So I'm guessing you need a new ip before replying to emails from each ebay account?

aspkin 02-27-2009 10:32 AM

No, it shouldn't because the email isn't being sent from your computer, it's being sent back to google's servers and then sent out. But like I said above, do a test email first to confirm this. Send an email to one of your non gmail accounts from outlook and check the headers.

Ebay doesnt track Google via pop or imap or web logon. Your IP is masked when you use google to send the email. It will not show in the header.

EbayFreak 02-27-2009 10:45 AM

Just a question here, if you use mozilla to get all my mails from the different accounts i have. Is this safe?

aquariusvc 03-07-2009 09:41 PM

they can't track your ip if you only get mail it only i know

Sorry, are you saying ebay doesn't track the IP address that views or sends replies to emails? Or are you saying it doesn't / can't track emails sent to or from googlemail addresses?

Hope this makes sense.

aspkin 03-11-2009 11:33 PM

Most likely eBay checks this information, and that's one of the reasons we recommend using 3rd party email systems like Gmail which disables tracking images which can grab your IP Address, and protects your IP by using their servers to send mail.
