The SSN serves two purposes.
A For identification. Used in conjunction with a matching name/address, it may be cross referenced using a 3rd party data furnisher such as credit bureaus, LexisNexis, or even directly from the SSA itself.
B For tax purposes. The number can also be used to reporting to IRS via form 1099-K
Faking this number presents two potential issues:
A) The number won't pass verification when attempt is made to match it to said person (if used for that reason)
B) Any tax liability may report to an invalid taxpayer, or worse, issued on that number belonging to a real person. This is the most serious as it involve tax fraud if the income is taken by you, and reported to someone else.
Please remember that SSN numbers are NOT random. They include data like where it was issued, and what year it was issued. This might not be hard data, but it can be used to infer data about the person it was issued to.
As far as verification is concerned, this can also easily be done via the CBSV database managed by the Social Security Administration. Here is the link for more info: https://www.ssa.gov/cbsv/
So, the moral of the story is if you "⊗⊗⊗⊗" it, it will likely result in a "not valid", "not found", or "name mismatch". |
