Etsy Flotation

Just had an email that Etsy is going public, shares to be offered through amongst other Goldman Sachs. Been a few posts about the tightening up of policies on the platform looks like it's been leading up to this.

Yea, got it too.

Hopefully nothing gets too crazy. Everything is still normal for me.

I don't even sell on it anymore but still get occasional emails!

I don't sell there anymore (praise The Lord!) but I got the email too. I read an article on it on Quartz.com and it was pretty interesting stuff:

According to the company’s audited financial statements it lost $15.2 million in 2014, following a loss of $796,000 in 2013 and $2.4 million in 2012. As for a turnaround, here’s what the company had to say in the always-interesting risk factors section of the filing.

We may not achieve or maintain profitability in the future. We expect that our operating expenses will increase substantially as we hire additional employees, increase our marketing efforts, expand our operations and continue to invest in the development of our platform, including new services and features for our members. These efforts may be more costly than we expect and our revenue may not increase sufficiently to offset these additional expenses. In addit ion, as a public company, we will incur significant legal, accounting and other expenses that we did not incur as a private company.

THAT last part cracked me up. I won't be buying any shares anytime soon.

Its been in the works for many years, at least they finally going to do it. If they spend more on marketing then great. I just hope they don't start raising fees to meet targets for their share holders.

Real question is who will be buying Etsy stock?

The only positive I see is that with the likely venture capital and stock money influx, they can advertise a lot more and bring more buyers over. etsy is currently flooded with lowball loser "I just do this as a hobby" type people and it's difficult to make a buck on there in lots of categories.
