How many copyright complaints before a shop is shut down?
 

Etsy's DMCA page says that if a shop is repeatedly reported for copyright violations, their shop can be shut down. How many violations does it take for that to happen?

There is not going to be an exact number. It will depend on a lot of factors.

If you sell copyrighted items, it will go down, sooner or later. May be 1 issue, may be 2, depends on different factors.

eBay tend to base it (primarily) on how established you are as a seller, amongst other factors. I would assume etsy does something similar.

A few years ago I sold some infringing items. I had 1 notice in 2014 and also 1 notice in 2015. From the second notice I deleted all risky products .. but I have a printable ticket that includes a playstation controller( a simple vector graphic.. no name ) and today I got an email from Etsy that they received a notice of copyright infringement from GameTruck, LLC alleging that certain material on Etsy is not authorized..

So I have 3 copyright complaints now :( I was just curious that how many copyright complaints before a shop is shut down? If this has happened with someone maybe can tell me..

I am Etsy seller from 2014 October and sold 6000 products already .. The products are non copyrighted products , not risky products.. maybe Etsy takes into consideration that I am a relatively busy shop ..

There is no set number that I am aware off - you are playing with fire if you continuously rack up more complaints :(

Account is marked now.

Used to buy off a seller from Riga. We discussed this issue. They had 2 notices within 6 weeks as well as delivery issues. Account was suspended.

I personally had 5 issues before I was shut, however.

2 came from the same source, and 1 was not so much a "don't sell stuff with our logo!" more a "If you are going to use our logo, please use it on our terms. Here is how... blah blah blah"

So honestly not sure, could be 5, could be 3. My account never had any other issues at all.

I personally assumed it was 5. Et.sy saw I had 5 counts of bad behavior and didn't care about the details.

unless this single product is going to make you a millionaire, then it's useless.

et.sy has no set number of warnings. it's simply at their own personal discretion, which makes it even worse than EB.

I've been up for 6 months received 8 notices I'm still up but received a final warning

Its 3. The 4th they will shut you down.

It seems everyone has a different answer, maybe there is some sort of formula. How much trouble you give them compared to how much money Et.sy earns off your sales :laugh:

that's why i said it's their personal discretion. ive had stores shut down at varying frequencies of warnings. anyone claiming otherwise is talking out of their a$$ and has little experience selling there. test it out for yourself and look at et.sy's own forums for more examples

Well if that is the case then I have to wonder how long one of my current Et.sy shops will last after having had 2 notices, I wonder if its time to merge that product into my main brand.

It really does vary, I received my final warning after 3 notices. On the other hand, my previous shop had about 5 notices before it was shut down and it was linked to another account that had about 4 notices. It really does depend. I think they are giving final notices before shutting you down now.

I second this. To have 8 notices within 6 months and still be open is a freakin miracle.

Okay, here to share. I stealthed E.tsy and have only been on for 4 months. Received 2 notices in 2 weeks and then 2 months go by and I received a "final" email saying the shop will be closed if I get another infringement. I DID NOT sign up for outside advertising and I DID NOT promote, DID NOT use "caution" tags, DID NOT use anyones pics (they are generic of my own). Sales so hot, over 700 sales in 3.5 months! SO COMPETITION IS OUT TO GET YOU I'M PROOF. How else did I get found? I'm only inside E.tsy walls therefore, competition had to point me out. Beware if you want to go back!!

They will shut the acct. down after 2 reports if you are selling copyrighted material and you don't have resell rights.

They shut me down, no notice and made me prove my process , and still denied my return.

I've gotten 8 notices, didn't get shut down got shutdown for something else.

best thing to do once you get a notice, put account on vacation mode. then email them telling them your working on what is causing the copyright issue. usually i tell them that its not copyright or w.e or just misused title, tags w.e make them happy

I found an item and put it to my 4 stores. The product was not handmade and even a 5-year-old child can understand it. But the item looks vintage and authentic.

I gambled, and made 450 sales (maybe around 1500 items) in 21 days before the christmas in 2014..

1 store was closed. I couldnt reinstall it. It was a 3-month-old account.
Other shop was suspended, but then I achieved to install it in one week. They told me to delete the product. It was a 1-year-old shop.
The other two shops were safe. Etsy only deactivated the items and mailed to me. That is all.. They were more than 1,5 year old. I dont remember well, but one of them was almost 2 years old.

But my problem was not copyright or anything else.. The story was about "handmade" or not.

It was a perfect christmas anyway.:) was My best selling record in my entire life...

How do you handle multiple shops? Do you make one Pay.pal for each shop or can 1 Pay.pal be use with many shops just add the new email address?

On eb.ay, you have to link your pay.pal to your eb.ay account.
However; on et.sy, you dont have to link your paypal to your et.sy account.
I link a credit card to et.sy to pay my bills and then add an email from my pay.pals.

Yes, every pay.pal acc had a few emails and I used different emails for my Et.sy accounts.

I, personally, advice to use a few pay.pals. For example, there was a crazy buyer, who bought 4-5 sales from my my father's et.sy account. Then, she wanted refund. Opened 4-5 cases on et.sy.:) She bought around 750 USD totally and it was a big amount for me. Because I send the products via DHL Express to USA.. Then my pay.pal account was limited (not suspended). I think It was 45 days or 60 days. I dont remember at the moment. And all of my accounts under my father's pay.pal was effected. Then, pay.pal found me right (my only win on pay.pal :D ) But they did not take the limit off at least 6 months..

All of my paypal accounts are safe; however; now in Turkey, pay.pal stopped its operations on June and I cannot use it...:)

Thank you very much Cihan! This is really helpful. I have only 1 shop per 1 PP at the moment. I will try to open more shops later.

A very important ADDITION to my last post...

Pay.pal does not inform ET.SY about my shops, OK..

However; there is a very important point you have to know very well.

Lets say I have a stealth account on pay.pal.. Lets name it as JESSICA...
I have a shop on ET.SY: SHOP A..
JESSICA recieves payments from SHOP A
Allright...

Then; you have another pay.pal account named ANGELINA...
Angelina also has shops on Et.sy.. Lets say SHOP B and SHOP C...
No problem.. Everything is ok..

One day; you want not to use pay.pal account named JESSICA..
You change the email address from Jessica's pp account to Angelina's pay.pal account on Et.sy payment page.

Here, ET.SY still doesnt know who you are. They dont understand that you have two pp accounts. However; Pay.pal immediately limits (no suspension) your account WHEN YOU RECIEVE THE FIRST PAYMENT for SHOP A...

That's why; for the example above...
Lets say your pay.pal account for Jessica was suspended by Pay.Pal..
SHOP A becomes a rubbish. Every Et.sy account has a SHOP ID.. Something like SSN.. Even you change the name of your shop on ET.SY, pp can still understand that it is the same shop..

So, In conclusion;
You can set up a management like my last post. But be careful when your pp gets limited or suspended.
