| | | | | BlackLion | 03-27-2017 08:49 AM | The American Dream Never Existed & Is An Illusion To The Majority of the Nation In a recent survey, 56 percent of Americans said they have less than $1,000 in their checking and savings accounts combined, Forbes reports. Nearly a quarter (24.8 percent) have less than $100 to their name. Meanwhile, 38 percent said they would pay less than their full credit card balance this month, and 11 percent said they would make the minimum payment—meaning they would likely be mired in debt for years and pay more in interest than they originally borrowed. It paints a daunting picture of the average American coming out of the spend-heavy holiday season: steeped in credit card debt, living paycheck-to-paycheck, at serious risk of financial ruin if the slightest thing goes wrong.
It's a reminder that, while the larger economy has steadily recovered from the Great Recession, the gains have not yet surfaced at the local level. Another study reports that just 65 of the 3,069 counties in the U.S. have fully recovered from the near-collapse in 2008. But it also speaks to the enduring effect of decades of wage stagnation, when many Americans' pay has not kept up with inflation and they have been left further and further behind.

| mc_vobla | 10-05-2017 02:34 PM | Re: The American Dream Never Existed & Is An Illusion To The Majority of the Nation I like to call it american opportunity. I read yesterday that there is 11 million millionaires(who have more than 1 mil) in USA and a population of 320 mil, so every 30th person is a millionaire or every 300th person has more than 5 mil, all according to statistics, thats a huge difference compared to country where I come from. This survey is flawed, you can't base your opinion on that piece of nonsense, maybe i'm wrong though.
All I can say is that people in america seem to take the opportunity given to them for granted and don't respect it and also want to gain more, but put less effort in their activity. |

On a more serious note - the problem is the gap between the poor and the rich is growing. The middle class as it was known in the 50's 60's and 70's is pretty much gone and we are left with a very large segment that would be considered lower class and a narrow band at top of the well off.
The American dream was all about being able to start at the bottom and work your way to top if you worked hard enough at it but today that has become exponentially more difficult and it kind of feels that those at the top are perpetuating this ever expanding gap in order to maintain their positon at the top. |

Re: The American Dream Never Existed & Is An Illusion To The Majority of the Nation at my age now, all i want to do is drive a decent sports car, have sex with a lot of hot women in every nasty way, travel to some places, and die in a cardboard box at the age of 30........i dont want to live past 30. |
| aspkin | 05-21-2018 12:03 AM | Re: The American Dream Never Existed & Is An Illusion To The Majority of the Nation Perspective is everything, right?
Some want the American Dream, some like like Jarsky541 wants "is drive a decent sports car, have sex with a lot of hot women in every nasty way, travel to some places, and die in a cardboard box at the age of 30........i dont want to live past 30."
Cool.
Life is what you make it. If that's what you want than you can have it. That's easier than being a millionaire in most cases. Maybe the American Dream needs to be adjusted. Maybe it needs to be more attainable.
I'm still trying to figure out what that means to me. So far I understand life is about happiness. And happiness is balance. Balance between your health, finances and family. If you can balance those three things well, you have happiness in most cases. I think that's all we can ask for. |

When I tell people I have traveled across the USA and operate business CHEAPER that staying at my old area of residence, most people find it unbelievable.
I love your dream because to me, now, life is all about experiences! |

I love your dream because to me, now, life is all about experiences! | Its very cheap to live on a sailboat. Some harbors in TX will only charge you $200-300 per month for a marina slot with full electric hook up.
I have always been the lone traveler in my family. That one person who travels by car and sleeps in it. It might take longer to get where you want but you get more photos along the journey.
My girlfriend wants to travel to Florida this summer, she'll fly there and I'll drive. She will only stay for 2 weeks then she goes back to work, me, I get to maybe stay for a few months, learn how to sail or even maybe buy one. naa...not yet.
I know 1 person who has been sailing for 7 years circumventing the world's oceans with his own boat called Delos. He has his own youtube channel. |

i came from a broken family and broken home..... | The American dream for me is more than any life in my old country of Cuba. I moved to the US when I was 5. I cannt say that I live a rich live but for me, I'm rich enough. I drive a good car, live happily in a good area, now if I can only lose about 20lb. I'll work on that when I get back home. |
| flipski | 07-10-2018 12:36 PM | Re: The American Dream Never Existed & Is An Illusion To The Majority of the Nation the american dream isnt all about having money in the bank. The american dream is mostly a term used by people who came from outside the country looking for better opportunities to life, most importantly, freedom, which is hard to come by in the same aspect that it is practiced here in the US | | All times are GMT -5.
